Chapter 2: The Nobility of the Holy Qur’an

The Nobility of the Holy Qur’an

The Holy Qur’an contains such great qualities that demonstrate its superiority, wisdom, purity, and sacredness as the Book of Allah (SWT). It displays resourcefulness by encompassing information about the hereafter, making inevitable prophecies, engaging in scientific and historical deliberations, maintaining objectivity, upholding truth and justice, and delivering a universal call to humanity. Its eloquent language and literary excellence further emphasize its significance. Moreover, the Qur’an’s literal truth and its impeccable preservation from any error, distortion, or alteration highlight its nobility, wisdom, greatness, holiness, and majestic dignity. Allah (SWT) has acknowledged these grand attributes of the Holy Qur’an in various verses, describing it as “The Most Honorable Qur’an” (56:77), “Glorious Qur’an” (50:1), “The Wise Qur’an” (36:2), “The Great Qur’an” (15:87), “The Manifest Qur’an” (15:1), “The Book of Beneficial Advice” (21:50), “The Criterion” (25:1), and “The Book of Majestic Power” (41:41). The nobility of the Qur’an lies in its ability to provide humanity with the greatest source of mercy and joy, surpassing any other worldly asset or accumulated knowledge.

Allah (SWT) says:

“O mankind! there hath come to you a direction from your Lord and a healing for the (diseases) in your hearts, – and for those who believe, a guidance and a Mercy. Say (O Prophet tell them): ‘In the bounty of Allah. And in His Mercy, – in that (the Qur’an) let them rejoice, that is better than the (knowledge and wealth) they hoard.” (10:57–58)

“And this is a Book which We have revealed as a blessing: so follow it and be righteous, that ye may receive mercy.” (6:155)

“Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Qur’an, or are their hearts locked up by them?” (47:24)

“That this is indeed a Qur’an Most Honorable, In Book well-guarded, Which none shall touch but those who are clean.”  (56:77—79)

“Has not the Time arrived for the Believers that their hearts in all humility should engage in the remembrance of Allah and of the Truth which has been revealed (to them), and that they should not become like those to whom was given Revelation aforetime, but long ages passed over them and their hearts grew hard? For many among them are rebellious transgressors.” (57:16)

The Qur’an: The Book of Truth & Knowledge

“Soon We will show them our signs on the horizons (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this (Qur’an) is the Truth. ….” (41:53)

The Qur’an embodies absolute truth, with every word aligned with the truth. Its messages are timeless and universal, serving as a continuous guide for humanity from the past to the Day of Qiyamah. Allah (SWT) has explicitly proclaimed the Qur’an as the ultimate and flawless guidance for mankind. He urges everyone to read this divine Book, acquire knowledge from it, and reflect upon its profound messages. The very first revealed verse, “Read” (96:1), emphasizes the importance of seeking truth through its teachings. As the Book of Allah (SWT), the Qur’an’s messages and statements are eternally perfect and immune to the effects of time. Despite the progress made in modern scientific discoveries and advancements, the Qur’an’s information and knowledge have remained unchallenged, standing firm in their accuracy.

Here are some verses quoted below on the above topic:

Challenges of The Holy Qur’an’s Authenticity

“Do they say that he (Prophet Muhammad ) fabricated it? Tell them: ‘Then produce a single Surah like any in it, and call whoever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful’.” (10:38)

The disbelievers harbored a great deal of suspicion and distrust toward the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Allah (SWT) has disproved their claims that He revealed the Qur’an to His Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He has unequivocally supported the veracity of the Qur’an, and the prophethood of Muhammad (ﷺ) as God’s last and final messenger. The Qur’an also attests to the prophethood of all previous prophets and messengers sent before Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), as well as the revelations of previous Divine Books revealed to earlier prophets and messengers. Though the earlier Divine Books revealed upon the previous Prophets lost their originality because of many alterations and distortions, the Qur’an still remains pure, unaltered, and completely free from any invention or fabrication and shall remain so till the Day of Qiyamah. This is because Allah (SWT) Himself has taken the responsibility of its preservation in His own hand (15:9). The Holy Qur’an has been inscribed in the ‘Lawhe Mahfouz’ (a Master Tablet Preserved) – kept in a secure place duly guarded by the Angels so as to keep it protected and safe from the touch of Satan, the outcast.

It was categorically mentioned in Qur’an that each and every verse of the Qur’an is the word of Allah (SWT) that has been revealed to His Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) through the Messenger Angel Jibreel (). Unbelievers, on the other hand, refused to accept the Qur’an as Allah’s words and Muhammad (ﷺ) as His Prophet and Messenger. They had several misconceptions about the Qur’an, including the belief that it was a fabrication of Muhammad (ﷺ). To uphold the Qur’an’s authenticity, Allah (SWT) Himself has thrown an open challenge to unbelievers, both humans, and jinn, asking them to compose a Surah similar to the Qur’an, even if it is like that of the shortest one. But, to this day, none of them have been able to face that challenge. Versifiers, atheists, and scholars of other religions have, however, attempted to take up the challenge, but none was able to produce any Surah like that of the Qur’an. This proves that the Qur’an is undoubtedly a unique Book of Allah (SWT) as to its contents, style of expression, the manifestation of the truth, presentation of historical facts, and rousing call for reasoning.

Allah (SWT) has revealed the following verses regarding the authenticity of the Qur’an:

اِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَاِنَّا لَه لَحٰفِظُوْنَ۝

“We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).” (15:9)

“The words of your Lord do find its fulfillment in truth and in justice: None can change His words: for He is the one who hears and knows all.” (6:115)

“Say: If the whole of mankind and Jinn were to come together to produce the similar Qur’an, they could not produce the like that, even if they backed up each other with help and support.” (17:88)

“And indeed, We have explained to man, in this Qur’an, every kind of similitude: yet the greater part of people refuse (to receive it) except with ingratitude! They say: ‘We shall not believe in you (O Prophet), until you cause a spring to gush forth for us from the earth, Or (until) you have a garden of date trees and vines, and cause rivers to gush forth in their midst, carrying abundant water; Or you cause the sky to fall in pieces, as you say (will happen), upon us; or you bring Allah and the angels before (us) face to face: Or you have a house adorned with gold, or you mount a ladder right into the skies. No, we shall not even believe in you mounting until you send down to us a book that we could read.’ Say: ‘Glory to my Lord! Am I anything at all but a man – an apostle’?” (17:89 – 93)

Yet they say: ‘Why are not Signs sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say: ‘The signs are true with Allah. And I am indeed a clear Warner.’ And is it not enough for them that we have sent down to you the Book which is rehearsed to them? Surely, in it is Mercy and a Reminder to those who believe. The Miracles of the Holy Qur’an

The Qur’an is not a Book of Science, but it contains many verses related to the Signs of Allah’s creations. It has a number of verses that contain scientific and historical truths, and mysteries of the universe, which remained unknown to the modern world until the recent discoveries of science. Modern science has discovered only 5% of the total universe like planets, stars, galaxies, etc. Many verses of the Qur’an still remained mysterious to scientists as human knowledge is unable to grasp them yet. That the Qur’an is the Book of Allah (SWT) – the Creator of the Universe, and All-Wise and All-Knowing, so, its statements are absolutely true and miraculous as well as beyond any doubt. Its statements revealed in the 7th century are found quite in conformity to the latest discoveries.

The miracles of the Holy Qur’an as the divine Book of Allah (SWT) have been explained below:

  • Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) says: ‘Every Prophet was given miracles because of which people believed, but what I have been given, is Divine Inspiration which Allah has revealed to me. So, I hope that my followers will outnumber the followers of the other Prophets on the Day of Resurrection.’ (Bukhari).

  • The miracle of the Qur’an lies in its uniqueness that it is the words of none but Allah (SWT). The Qur’an has still remained unchallenged as the words of Allah (SWT), as none among men or jinn has been able to produce a chapter or even a verse like the Qur’an. (2:23), (10:37), (11:13), (17:88).

  • One of the significant miracles of the Qur’an is that though it was revealed fourteen hundred years ago, still it has been remained free from any error, omission, alteration, mutilation or distortion, interpolation or multiple versions. So, the authenticity of the Qur’an is unquestionable (4:82), (41:42), (56:77 – 80), (69:40 – 52), (85:21 – 22).

  • The Miracle of the Qur’an lies in its unique contribution to purifying human souls by curing the diseases of the human mind. (10:56), (17:82).

  • Men, Jinn, and even the arch enemies of the Prophet (ﷺ) all felt attraction when they heard the recitation of the Qur’an (17:107 – 109), (46:29 – 32), (72:1 – 15).

  • Another miracle of the Qur’an is that if all the written and printed copies of the Qur’an are lost from the earth, it will remain intact in the hearts and memories of ‘Huffaz’ who memorized all the verses numbering more than six thousand. So. it will easily come out again in printed form.

  • Many tender-aged children of six to ten years old from different tongues are memorizing the whole Qur’an comfortably within a short period of time. So, the Qur’an will never be lost from earth till the Day of Qiyamah. This is just unique and incomparable with any other book.

  • The Qur’an is acclaimed as the most outstanding literary masterpiece in the Arabic language of all time. Arabic literature reached its pinnacle during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and the Qur’an outstripped literary skills of all time, serving as the final literary standard for the Arabic language. Not a single word or idiom or allegory of the Qur’an has been outdated so far. Both the Qur’anic language and Arabic language have been maintaining their unchanged characteristics for the last 1400 years and will remain so in future too.

  • Arabic has been sanctified as a language of the Qur’an. The notable poets and litterateurs though accepted the challenge of the Qur’an but failed to compose a single couplet like Qur’anic verses.

  • The spectacular miracle of the Qur’an is that its statements are based on absolute truth as it contains no contradiction or error in its messages. (6:115).

  • One more miracle of the Qur’an is that none feels bored by repeated recitations because of its distinctive appeal in believers’ minds. Muhammad M. Pickthall, a famous English translator of the Qur’an said: “…. the Glorious Qur’an, that inimitable symphony, the very sounds of which move men to tears and ecstasy.”

  • The Qur’an has been revealed in Arabic and has created linguistic unity in the Muslim world. Even today, after long fourteen hundred years, the Holy Qur’an exists as a living miracle for mankind. (43:1 – 4)

  • Above all, the Qur’an was revealed on ‘Lailatul Qadr’ – the Glorious Night of the month of Ramadan, which is better than one thousand months of worship. (97:1 – 3)

Verses relating to this marvelous Qur’an are cited below:

“Indeed, We revealed (the Qur’an) during the Night of Decree (or Power). And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace! It is until the emergence of dawn.” (97:1 – 5)

“This is indeed Qur’an – the Most Honorable, preserved in the Book well-guarded, which none shall touch but those who are pure and clean; A Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.” (56:77 – 80)

“Do they not consider the Qur’an (with care)? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found therein many discrepancies.” (4:82)

“The words of your Lord do find its fulfillment in truth and in justice: None can change His words: for He is the one who hears and knows all.” (6:115)

“Verily this is a speech (the Qur’an) brought by an honored messenger; it is not the word of a poet: little it is you believe! Nor is it the word of a soothsayer: little admonition it is you receive. (This is) a Message sent down from the Lord of the Worlds. And if the apostle were to invent any sayings in Our name, We should certainly seize him by his right hand, And We should certainly then cut off the artery of his heart: Nor could any of you withhold him (from Our wrath). But verily this is a Message for the Allah-fearing. And We certainly know that there are amongst you those that reject (it). But truly (Revelation) is a cause of sorrow for the unbelievers. But verily it is Truth of assured certainty. So, glorify the name of your Lord Most-High.” (69:40 – 52)

The Qur’an: An Evidence of Humans’ Emancipation

“O mankind! There has come to you a direction (Qur’an) from your Lord and a healing for the (diseases) in your hearts, and (it is) a guidance and a Mercy to true believers.” (10:57)

The Holy Qur’an is a Book of Divine Guidance to Humanity as it brings them from the darkness of ignorance to the light of truth, and emancipates their souls. The people of Arabia during ‘Ayyame Jahelia’ (Age of Darkness) were living a life having no regard for ethical and humane values. Their spiritual life was in jeopardy as they were fighting each other on their vanity and vested interests. Their unruly behavior, brutal conduct, and rude nature lowered them to the meanest position. At that critical time, Allah (SWT) revealed the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) for their true guidance. The Qur’an’s teachings enlightened their hearts and brought about a radical change in their lives. They changed their previous fallacious faith, discarded pride of race and color, and tribal egoism. Finally, they accepted Islam and became united as one Ummah. (3:103), (10:57 – 58)

The Era of Ignorance was not only prevalent in Arabia but also all over the world. Humans forgot the real aim of life, lost their core values, and stigmatized their dignity. They became involved in Idolatry, which put them in the servitude of a plethora of fictitious gods, with no power to do any benefit or harm. They forgot the Oneness of Almighty Allah (SWT) and started worshipping multiple gods considering them as His partners and intercessors. All these fabrications and lies polluted their souls and diminished their dignity as Viceroy of Almighty Allah on this earth. Most people’s hearts became stained with relentless evil desires, superstitions, sins, and corruptions. During that time the Qur’an with the divine light of truth showed entire humanity the path of deliverance from all kinds of ignorance and falsehood.

The acceptability of the Qur’anic ideology among the common people was so overwhelming that it built a Muslim nation based on equality and justice. No other Book has so far produced such revolutionary changes. The Holy Qur’an as divine guidance is enough to influence humanity all over the world to emancipate their souls and bring positive changes in their lives.

The following verses of the Qur’an support the above statement:

اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعٰلَمِيْنَ ۝ لِمَنْ شَآءَ مِنْكُمْ اَنْ يَّسْتَقِيْمَ ۝

“Indeed this (Qur’an) is a great Message to (all people of) the Worlds; (beneficial) for those who amongst you wish to lead (themselves) to the straight path.” (81:27 – 28)

“Read! in the name of your Lord and Cherisher – Who created – Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood. Read! And your Lord is Most Bountiful, He Who taught (the use of) the pen, – taught man that which he knew not.” (96:1 – 5)

“And say: “Truth has (now) come, and Falsehood vanished away: for Falsehood is (by its nature) bound to extinct.” (17:81)

“And hold fast to the rope of Allah altogether, and do not become separated. And remember Allah’s favors upon you; how you were enemies, and He reconciled your hearts, and by His grace you became brethren. And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, and He saved you from it. Allah thus clarifies His revelations for you, so that you may be rightly guided.” (3:103)
