Chapter: 29 Verses on Supplications and Repentance

Significance of Tawbah (Repentance) & Du’a (Supplications)

“….. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.” (2:222).

To err is human, and to forgive is divine. Allah (SWT) is always ready to forgive His repentant servants. He is the infinite source of mercy and forgiveness. According to the Quranic verse, He is not only الرَّحْمٰـنِ الرَّحِيْمِ – the Most Kind and Merciful, but also, غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِيْمٌ – the Most Forgiving. Allah has kept open all the doors of His charities, bounties, kindness, and forgiveness for all of His servants, irrespective of their faith and loyalty. He knows that His servants are weak, forgetful, and erring. Sometimes they do wrongs, being prompted by Satan and driven by evil desires, and fall into distress. Sometimes Allah (SWT) lets them pass through hardship so as to test their endurance, patience, faith, and trust in Him. In all trying situations, Allah (SWT) is the best Protector of His servants. He asks them to repent for their wrongdoings and sins and beg His mercy and forgiveness in all circumstances.

Tawbah (turning to Allah with sincere repentance) and Du’a (supplication to Almighty Allah) are the two means to get His mercy and forgiveness for deliverance from great sins. Allah, the Most Merciful, is always ready to forgive repentant servants who make Tawbah and promise not to commit the grievous offenses again. He likes to forgive those who call Him with all sincerity. He has taken mercy and forgiveness as duty-bound for His repentant servants.

Du’a is a superb means of securing the welfare and benefit of this world and the hereafter. It is through Du’a one begs forgiveness to His Lord for committing errors, appeals to get relief from adversities and suffering, prays earnestly for fulfillment of good desires, and supplicates for the welfare and peace of this life and afterlife. Prophet (ﷺ) said. ‘Du’a is the essence of worship’. Allah’s servants make invocation to Him with all sincerity, humility and trust for a good purpose. Allah (SWT) responds to Du’a of His servants. Besides, He pardons many small sins of His servants spontaneously. Allah (SWT) has kept reserved His infinite favors and rewards for His believing and obedient servants in hereafter.

Du’a is a golden opportunity to make a direct connection between Allah (SWT) and His servants. At the time of Du’a He stays very close to them. Allah says: “And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near to them. I respond to the supplications of the suppliant when he calls on Me!” (2:186). Allah answers His servants’ call when they pray to Him with patience and trust. Allah (SWT) further says: “Say (O Prophet): My Lord only pays attention to you because of your Du’a to Him……..” (25:77).

In the following verses Almighty Allah has asked His servants to call Him directly and earnestly:

“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves: do not despair of Allah’s mercy, for Allah forgives all sins. He is indeed the Forgiver, the Clement.’ And turn to your Lord, and submit to Him, before the retribution comes upon you. Then you will not be helped.” (39:53 – 54)

“As for those who commit sins, and then repent afterwards and accept Imaan (faith), then thereafter, certainly your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.” (7:153)

“….. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.” (2:222)

“Your Lord has said, ‘Pray to Me, and I will respond to you. But those who are too proud to worship Me, soon they will enter the Hell being disgraced.” (40:60)

“He is the Living (One): There is no god but He: Call upon Him, giving Him sincere devotion. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds!” (40:65)

“Call upon your Lord humbly and secretly……” (7:55)

“It is He who accepts the repentance of His servants, and remits the sins, and knows what you do. And He responds those who believe and do good deeds, and He increases them of His grace. But the disbelievers will suffer a terrible punishment.” (42:25 – 26)

“So be patient. The promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness for your sin and proclaim the praise of your Lord evening and morning.” (40:55)

“And when My servants ask you about Me, indeed I am near; I answer the call of the caller when he calls on Me. So, let them respond Me, and have faith in Me, that they may be rightly guided.” (2:186)

“When We provide welfare to the human being, he withdraws and turns away; but when adversity befalls him, he starts lengthy prayers.” (41:51)

“Why they do not turn back to Allah in repentance, and seek His forgiveness? For Allah is Oft- forgiving, Most Merciful.” (5:74)

“And when those who believe in Our signs, come to you, then say. ‘Peace be upon you! Your Lord has made it His own responsibility to bestow mercy upon you. When one amongst you indulges in evil out of ignorance, subsequently return back (with repentance) and do good deeds, then Allah is truly the most Pardoning and Kind.” (6:54)

“………. And collectively repent to Allah, O you believers, so that you may succeed.” (24:31)

“O Believers!  Repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remit your sins, and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the Day when Allah will not disappoint the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light emitting before them, and to their right…….” (66:8)

“Except for those who repent, and believe, and do good deeds — for such people Allah will replace their bad deeds with good deeds. Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful. Whoever repents and acts righteously – has indeed turned to Allah earnestly.” (25:70 – 71)

“There are some other people who have confessed their sins, having mixed good deeds with bad deeds. Perhaps Allah will soon accept their repentance. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Take charity from their wealth, to purify them and cleanse them with it; and pray for them. Your prayer is a source of comfort for them. Allah is certainly Hearing and Knowing.” (9:102 – 103)

“Except the one who had done wrong, but then (being repentant) replaced evils with goodness. Verily I am most Forgiving and most Merciful.” (27:11)

“Of course, Allah accepts the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and repent soon afterwards; to them will Allah turn in mercy: For Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.” (4:17)

“And those who continue to do evil, deserve no clemency, until death comes before one of them, and he says, ‘Now I repent’; nor for those who die rejecting Faith: for them have We prepared a punishment most grievous.” (4:18)

“And ask your Lord for forgiveness and repent to Him. He will provide you with good sustenance until a specified term and will bestow His grace on every virtuous person. But if you turn away, then I fear for you the punishment of a grievous Day.” (11:3)

“Your Lord knows best what is in your hearts: If you do deeds of righteousness, verily He is Most Forgiving to those who turn to Him again and again (in true repentance).” (17:25)

“Or, Who responds to the distressed person when he/she calls Him, and Who relieves his/her suffering, and makes you (mankind) inheritors of the earth? (Can there be another) God besides Allah. Little it is that you heed!” (27:62)

“So, remember Me, and I will remember you. And thank Me, and do not be ungrateful.” (2:152)

How to make Du’a

“O mankind! It is you who are the needy before Allah; while Allah is the Rich (free of all needs) and worthy of all praise.” (35:15).

While making Du’a, one should stand before the Lord of the Universe as a beggar. When one prays to Him with all humility like a beggar, His forgiveness, mercy and favors overflow for His slave. According to a Hadith, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If one makes Du’a in all humbleness, with an attentive heart, and full trust in Allah (SWT), one attracts the Master’s gaze of mercy, who is not shy in turning His slave away empty handed.” (Tirmidhi, Ahmed, Abu Dawood). Nobody will get salvation in the hereafter by doing only good deeds, if not placed before Allah (SWT) through sincere supplication.

Allah (SWT) has mentioned numerous supplications in the Holy Qur’an, encouraging His servants to seek His mercy, forgiveness, and blessings in both this world and the hereafter. Therefore, supplications should be made with utmost conviction and unwavering trust in Allah’s ultimate wisdom. It is important not to rush for immediate results, as Allah (SWT) may choose to accept the supplication instantly or delay it for a future time, always considering what is best for His servants. With His perfect knowledge of their affairs, Allah (SWT) holds the key to their ultimate benefit. It is unwise to become disheartened by any delay in the acceptance of supplications. Instead, by maintaining patience and placing complete trust in the Lord, one can anticipate a positive outcome.

In a Hadith Prophet (ﷺ) stated that: “Nothing increases one’s lifespan except good deeds, and nothing repels Divine Decree except Du’a. And verily, a person may be deprived of sustenance due to a sin that he commits!” – (Narrated by Ibn Majah #90 and confirmed authentic by Shaykh Al-Albani in As-Sahihah #154).

While making Du’a one should observe the following process:

  • At the beginning of Du’a it is courteous to praise Allah (SWT) first, and then send Darood and Salam to His prophets and messengers. Sending much Darood to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) will increase the likelihood of acceptance of Du’a.
  • While making Du’a for oneself, it is also courteous to pray for parents, children, relatives, neighbors, and believing men and women.

Generally, Du’a starts with praising of Allah (SWT) reciting the verse: اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعلَمِيْنَ۝: “All praises to the Lord of the universe.” (1:1) and concludes with the verses: سُبْحٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ الْعِزَّۃِ عَمَّا یَصِفُوْنَ ۝ وَ سَلٰمٌ عَلَی الْمُرْسَلِیْنَ ۝ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ ۝: “Exalted be your Lord, the Lord of all honors, is pure from what they attribute in Him. And peace be upon the Messengers. And praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe.” (37:180 – 182). Allah (SWT) says in the following verse: وَاٰخِرُ دَعْوٰىهُمْ اَنِ الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ ۝ :“…… and the end of their prayer shall be: ‘Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds’!” (10:10)

Time and Place of Acceptance of Du’a

Du’a (Supplications) have no limitations in terms of time, place, language, or condition. Hopefully, Du’a may be accepted in any situation. However, there are some special occasions, conducive and opportune moments, and sacred places designated for spontaneous acceptance of Du’a. One Hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (), wherein Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Our Lord descends to the bottom heaven during the third part of the nighttime, asking: ‘Who will call upon Me so that that I may answer? Who will seek something from Me so that I may give it to him? Who will seek My forgiveness so that I may forgive him?” (Bukhari and Muslim).

One of the most opportune times for the acceptance of Du’a is during the Sujud (prostration) in Salah as it is when Allah (SWT) remains closest to His servants. Another high time is the late night when Allah (SWT) descends to the earthly sky and invites His servants to pray to Him through Tahajjud Salat (Late Night Prayer), with the intention of forgiving their sins and bestowing His mercy and blessings upon them. Additionally, there are various other significant times and places that hold importance for the acceptance of Du’a.

Du’a before Recitation of the Holy Qur’an

Allah (SWT) asks to take refuge with Him from Satan before reciting the Holy Qur’an:

“So, when you read the Qur’an, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the outcast.” (16:98)

Therefore, one should recite the following Du’as to start reading the Qur’an:

“I am taking refuge to Allah from Satan, the outcast.”

“In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.”

Du’a at the End of Recitation of the Whole Qur’an:

“O Allah, grant me comfort in my loneliness in the grave.
O Allah, have mercy on me through the Glorious Qur’an.
Make it for me a leader, a light, a guidance, and a mercy.
O Allah, remind me of what I forget from it,
and teach me from it what I do not know.
Grant me its recitation during the hours of the night and the hours of the day,
and make it a proof in my favor, O Lord of the worlds.”

Du’as mentioned in the Holy Qur’an:

A good number of Du’as are found in the Holy Qur’an. Allah (SWT) has revealed the Ayat of Du’a in the Qur’an to teach His servants to pray to Him with good intention and sincere heart to get His favor and forgiveness for this world and for the hereafter. Here are such Du’as quoted below:

Du’a in Surah Fatiha

Fatiha, the first Surah of the Qur’an contains 7 verses, and every verse is a beneficial Du’a, which are repeatedly recited in every ‘rak’ah’ of Salat. Prophet (ﷺ) urged upon saying ‘Ameen’ (i.e., ‘O Allah accept our Du’a’) at the end of recitation. In a Hadith, narrated by Abu Hurairah (), wherein Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Allah (SWT) instantly gives answer to all verses of this Surah when recited in Salat.’

Du’a for Parents

Du’a of Disbelievers

Allah (SWT) will not accept Du’a of disbelievers for mercy, welfare and blessings for salvation in the hereafter because of their disbelief, refusal and arrogance in their worldly life. They will get rewards of their good deeds in this life, but in the hereafter, they will have no share. The punishment of their disbelief will be severe and eternal in the hereafter. They were given enough time and opportunities in this world to mend their belief and conduct and return to the path of Allah, but they showed utter negligence and paid no heed to the warnings. So, their punishment will be inevitable in the hereafter.

Verses on this topic are quoted below:

Du’a of Satan

Iblis, the Satan defied Allah’s command to prostrate Adam () out of arrogance and jealousy. Allah (SWT) cursed him and ousted him from heaven for his disobedience. He then turned into Satan and became an archenemy of humankind. Iblis prayed respite from worldly punishment till the Day of Qiyamah and sought the power of tempting humans to mislead humans to keep them away from the path of Allah. Allah (SWT) then accepted his prayer. Satan’s du’a is quoted below:

“(Satan) said: “O my Lord! Give me then respite till the Day the (dead) are raised’.” (38:79)
