ToggleThe Qur’an Refutes Religious Discords of Ahlul Kitab
“(O Prophet) We have revealed the Scripture (Qur’an) to you only to clarify for them what they differ about, and as guidance and mercy for people who believe.” (16:64)
Ahlul Kitab’ is a Qur’anic term known as ‘People of the Book’ that refers to the Jews, the Christians, the Zoroastrians, and the Sabians who received the Divine Books before the revelation of the Holy Qur’an. With the passage of time, Ahlul Kitab corrupted their scriptures by mixing the original revelation with human interpolations and interpretations. Also, many Jewish and Christian scholars and researchers of modern times admit that the previous scriptures like Tourat and Injeel lost their originality, pristine purity, and infallibility because of distortions and alterations by many hands. As a result, the insertion of myths and fabricated stories tainted the purity of these Scriptures, resulting in fallacies and religious discord. The main issues of discords are:
- Denial of Unity of God and belief in many deities and associating them with Allah.
- Ascribing Lies against Allah (SWT) such as He has mate, He has begotten son or daughter, and He has intercessors with Him.
- Discord over Halal and Haram as ordained by Allah.
- Discord over the Scriptures of Allah (SWT) and corruption of their verses by fabrications.
- Discord over the Holy Qur’an and the Prophet of Islam.
- Discord over the Prophets of Allah (SWT).
The Qur’an has resolutely and clearly refuted the above issues of discord, misconceptions and lies against Allah (SWT). It validated the earlier Scriptures of Allah and highlighted numerous topics that had been misconstrued or altered in them. It rejected all the faulty concepts of Ahlul Kitab and answered all the issues of dispute in the light of truth and reason. On the Day of Judgement, Allah (SWT) will judge the issues of discord based on religious beliefs and tell the disputants which one was on the righteous path.
The Qur’anic verses on above topic are given below:
“(O Prophet) We have revealed the Scripture to you only to clarify for them what they differ about, and as guidance and mercy for people who believe.” (16:64)
“And We have revealed to you the Book, with truth, attesting the Books that preceded it, and guarding the truths revealed therein. So, judge between them according to what Allah revealed, and do not follow their desires if they differ from the truth that has come to you. For each of you We have assigned a law and a way. Had Allah willed, He could have made you a single nation, but He tests you through what He has given you. So, compete in righteousness. To Allah is your return, all of you; then He will inform you of what you had disputed.” (5:48)
“For every Ummah (community) We have fixed acts of worship, which they observe. So do not let them dispute with you in this matter. And invite them towards your Lord; you are upon a straight path. But if they dispute with you, say, ‘Allah is fully aware of what you do.’ Allah will judge between you on the Day of Qiyamah regarding what you disagreed.” (22:67 – 69)
“Among the Jews there are dispute some who displace the words for distortion, and say, ‘We hear and we disobey’, and ‘Hear without listening’, and ‘Observe us,’ twisting with their tongues and slandering the religion. Had they said, ‘We hear and we obey’, and ‘Listen’ and ‘Look at us with favor,’ it would have been better for them, and more upright. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief; they do not believe except a few.” (4:46)
“Have you not seen those (Jews) to whom a portion of the Book has been given? They believe in idols and false deities and say about those who disbelieve that they are better guided in the righteous path than those who believe’.” (4:51)
“And We settled the Bani Israel (Children of Israel) in a blessed land and provided them with pure things. They did not differ until knowledge (of scriptural edicts) came to them. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection regarding their differences.” (10:93)
“This Qur’an narrates to the Children of Israel most of what they differ about. And it is guidance and mercy for the believers. Your Lord will judge between them by His wisdom. He is the Almighty, the All-Knowing.” (27:76 – 78)
“(O Children of Israel,) And believe in what I revealed (in the Qur’an), which confirms what is with you; and do not be the first to deny it; and do not sell My revelations for a small price; and be conscious of Me. And do not mix truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth while you know.” (2:41 – 42)
“Say (O Prophet), ‘O People of the Book! Do not make excesses in your religion overriding the truth; and do not follow the opinions of people who went astray before, and misled many, and themselves strayed off the straight path.” (5:77)
“The People of the Book challenge you to bring down to them a book from the sky. They had asked Musa (Musa) for something even greater. They said, ‘Show us Allah face to face.’ The thunderbolt struck them for their sin. Then they took the calf for worship, even after the clear proofs had come to them. Yet We pardoned that, and We gave Musa a clear authority. And We raised the Mount above them in accordance with their covenant, and We said to them, ‘Enter the gate humbly’, and We said to them, ‘Do not violate the Sabbath’, and We received from them a solemn pledge. But for their violation of their covenant, and their denial of Allah’s revelations, and their killing of the prophets unjustly, and their saying, ‘Our hearts are covered’. In fact, Allah has sealed them for their disbelief, so they do not believe, except for a few.” (4:153 – 155)
“Humanity was once a single community; then Allah sent the prophets, bringing good news and giving warnings. And He sent down with them the Scripture, with the truth, to judge between people regarding their differences. But none differed over it except those who were given it – after the proofs had come to them – out of mutual envy between them. Then Allah guided those who believed to the truth they had disputed, in accordance with His will. Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.” (2:213)
“Mankind was a single Ummah (community); then they differed. Had it not for a prior decree from your Lord, the matters of their discord would have been settled.” (10:19)

“They became divided only after knowledge (of religion) came to them, out of antipathy among themselves. If it were not for a predetermined decision from your Lord till a prescribed term, Judgement would have been pronounced between them. Indeed, those who were made to inherit the Book after them are in grave doubt about it. Call towards this (Qur’an), and be upright as you were commanded, and do not follow their inclinations, and say, ‘I believe in the Book that Allah has revealed, and I was commanded to judge between you equitably. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. We have our deeds, and you have your deeds. Let there be no dispute between us and you. Allah will bring us together, and to Him is the ultimate return.’ As for those who dispute about Allah after having accepted His call, their argument is invalid with their Lord; and upon them falls wrath; and a grievous torment waits for them.” (42:14 – 16)

“And they say, ‘Be Jews or Christians, and you will be rightly guided.’ (O Prophet) Say, ‘Rather, the religion of Ibrahim, the Monotheist; he was not an idolater.’ Say, ‘We believe in Allah; and in what was revealed to us; and in what was revealed to Ibrahim, and Ismael, and Ishaaq, and Yaqoob, and their descendants; and in what was given to Musa and Isa; and in what was given to the prophets – from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we surrender.’ If they believe in the same as you have believed in, then they have been rightly guided. But if they turn away, then they are in injudiciousness. Allah will protect you against them; for He is the Hearer, the Knower.” (2:135 – 137)

“The Jews said, ‘Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah,’ and the Christians said, ‘The ‘Messiah is the son of Allah.’ These are mere words out of their mouths. They imitate the statements of those who blasphemed before. May Allah destroy them! Which wrong way they are straying? They have taken their rabbis and their priests as lords instead of Allah, and son of Maryam as well. Although they were commanded to worship none but The One God. There is no god except He. Glory be to Him; He is Pure from all that they associate with Him.” (9:30 – 31)

Bani Israel: Allah’s Favors & Curse upon them
The Bani Israel are the descendants of the Prophet Yaqoob (). His other name was Israel, and so, his progenies are known as ‘Bani Israel’ after him. Like his father, Prophet Ishaq () and grandfather, Prophet Ibrahim () Yaqoob () was one of the prophets of Allah (SWT). He would live in Kenan, Syria and had twelve sons. One of them was Yusuf () who was the most beloved son of his father because of his excellent character and manners. He fell into distress when his stepbrothers, out of jealousy, threw him into a well. A traders’ caravan rescued him and transported him to Egypt, where he was sold to a Minister of the King’s Court. After many trials during his childhood and youth, Allah (SWT) finally settled him in Egypt, conferring on him prophethood, wisdom, and knowledge of interpreting dreams. Because of his exceptional talents, he was able to draw the attention and confidence of the King of Egypt, who appointed him as his Minister of Treasury. Yusuf () successfully managed the famine-time crisis of foodstuffs by developing a proper storage and distribution system. His father, Yaqoob (), and stepbrothers were also sufferers of that famine. So, he brought them all to live with him in Egypt. Thenceforth, the progenies of Yaqoob () lived in Egypt with honor and dignity.
During the reign of King Fir’awn of Egypt, the people of Bani Israel were persecuted harshly. He enslaved them, made them lowly, killed their male children, and forced them to do odd jobs with nominal or no wages. In that critical situation, Allah (SWT) sent Musa () and his brother Haroon () to rescue them from a perilous predicament. At first, Musa () invited Fir’awn towards Allah’s Deen, and then requested him to let the people of Bani
Israel to accompany him. But Fir’awn rejected both the proposals outright and began more oppression and repression on them. At last, Allah (SWT) commanded Musa () to leave Egypt with the people of Bani Israel. Fir’awn and his force chased them. Allah (SWT) helped Musa () and Bani Israel to cross the Red Sea, while Fir’awn and his men were drowned in the Red Sea and totally destroyed. Thus, Allah (SWT) delivered Bani Israel from the tyrannies of Fir’awn.
Allah (SWT) bestowed a lot of favors upon the Bani Israel and sent a good number of Messengers and Prophets for their true guidance. Because of Allah’s profound favor, they became His chosen people. But the people of Bani Israel often showed their arrogance and ungratefulness to Allah (SWT). They defied their Prophets and Messengers, tortured them, and even killed many of them. So, they earned Allah’s curse and condemnation many times for their transgressions and sins. A number of verses of different Surahs of the Holy Qur’an, including Surah Baqarah, give a vivid description of their overall characteristics.
The related verses on Bani Israel are quoted below:
“We divided them (Bani Israel) into sections on this earth. There are among them some that are the righteous, and some that are the opposite. We have tested them with both prosperity and adversity: In order that they might return.” (7:168)

He persecuted a group of them, slaughtering their sons, while sparing their daughters. He was truly a wrongdoer. But We desired to favor those who were oppressed in the land, and to make them leaders, and to make them the inheritors. And to establish them in the land; and to show Fir’awn, Hamaan, and their troops, the very thing they feared.” (28:3 – 6)

“And We inspired Musa: ‘Leave by night with My servants, and strike for them a dry path across the sea, not fearing being overtaken (by Fer’awn’s army), nor worrying (of drowning in the sea).’ Fer’awn chased them with his troops, but the sea overwhelmed them, and completely engulfed them. Fer’awn misled his people and did not guide them (to righteous path).” (20:77 – 79)

“Miserable is what they sold their souls for – rejecting what Allah has revealed, out of resentment that Allah would send down His grace upon whomever He chooses from among His servants. Thus, they incurred wrath upon wrath. And there is a demeaning punishment for the disbelievers. And when it is said to them, ‘Believe in what Allah has revealed,’ they say, ‘We believe in what was revealed to us,’ and they reject anything beyond that, although it is the truth which confirms what they have. Say, ‘Why did you kill Allah’s prophets before, if you were believers?’ Musa came to you with clear proofs, yet you adopted the calf as deity in his absence, indeed you were the oppressors.” (2:90 – 92)
Jews: Their Misconceptions and Transgressions
“Yehudi” (a Hebrew word for Jew), was originally a member of the tribe Judah, which was one of the tribes of Bani Israel. The word Judaism means “Judah-ism”, the religion of the Yehudim. They were the followers of Musa (). During the Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) time, several powerful Jewish tribes lived in and around Madinah. They had been expecting that Allah’s last and final Prophet would come from among them. But when they found that the last and final prophet came from the tribe of Quraish, the descendants of Ismail (), they became jealous and egoistic. Since the time of their Prophet Musa (), they have been found arrogant and defiant against Allah’s commandments. Because of their misdeeds, misconceptions, and arrogance, they strayed from the path of Allah.
When Prophet Mohammad (ﷺ) migrated from Makkah to Madinah the Jews tribe couldn’t accept him as the last and final prophet. They used to cherish a grudge against him and even attempted to kill him. Their treachery and deception posed a serious threat to the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Muslim population of Madinah. Many Jews committed sins and offenses against other prophets of Allah (SWT) prior to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The Holy Qur’an gave a detailed description of their characteristics, sinful deeds, and consequences.
The major characteristics of Jews are summarized below:
- They belonged to the hypocritical nature (5:41) and would frequently breach the trusts and pledges (3:75).
- They would compete in sin and transgression, as well as in the consumption of illicit goods. (5:62)
- Their hearts were hardened, becoming as hard as rocks, or even harder (2:74) because of committing repeated offenses of difiance and blasphemy (5:64).
- They would kill the prophets unjustly because they rebelled and committed aggression (2:87), (3:112).
- They would kindle the fire of war and strive to spread corruption on earth. (5:64)
- They would long for life more than all mankind and wish to live a thousand years. (2:96)
- They would willingly distort the truth and eagerly listen to any lies (5:41). They would twist the Scripture of Allah with their tongues, and write the Scripture with their own hands, and then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ that they might exchange it for a little price. (2:79)
- They would believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in the other part. (2:85)
- They were used to usury, although it was forbidden for them; and they would devour people’s wealth dishonestly. (4:161)
Here are some Qur’anic passages on Jews as given below:
“The example of those who were entrusted with the Tourat, but then failed to uphold it, is like the donkey carrying a load of books. Miserable is the example of the people who denounce Allah’s revelations. Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.” (62:5)
“Among the People of the Book is he, who, if you entrust him with a heap of gold, he will give it back to you. And among them is he, who, if you entrust him with a single coin, he will not give it back to you, unless you keep standing over him. That is because they say, ‘We are under no obligation towards the gentiles (non-Jews).’ They tell lies about Allah, and they know it.” (3:75)
“And (O Prophet) you see many of them competing with one another in sin and transgression, and their consuming of what is illicit. What they have been doing is truly evil. Why do the rabbis and the priests not prevent them from speaking sinfully and from consuming what is unlawful? Evil is what they have been doing.” (5:62 – 63)

Do not grieve for those who rush to disbelief; from among those who say with their mouths, ‘We believe,’ but their hearts do not believe; and from among the Jews who eagerly listen to any lies. They hear from you to convey (for spying) to other people who did not come to you. They distort words from their places, and they say, ‘If you are given this, accept it; but if you are not given it, beware.’ Whomever Allah has willed to divert – you have nothing for him from Allah. Those are they whose hearts Allah does not intend to purify. For them is disgrace in this world, and for them is a great punishment in the Hereafter. Listeners to falsehoods, eaters of illicit earnings…….” (5:41 – 42)

Christianity: Their Doctrine of Trinity and Misperceptions
The exceptional birth of Masih Isa Ibn Maryam () from the womb of his virgin mother Maryam () was a miracle and a unique sign of the Almighty Allah’s creation. Regarding his unusual and miraculous birth, some misperceptions cropped up. While Christians regarded him as God’s son, Jews questioned his mother Maryam’s () virginity. Besides his birth, Allah (SWT) bestowed upon him a number of miracles. Christianity made his crucifixion a myth for vicarious atonement for human sins. After Isa’s () miraculous ascension into heaven, Christianity started propagating a false Doctrine of the Trinity. All these points of contention have been resolved accurately by the Holy Qur’an.
The following are Qur’anic verses on this topic:
“Verily the likeness of Isa (Jesus) in Allah’s sight is that of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him, ‘Be’, and he became. The truth is from your Lord, so do not be of those who doubt.” (3:59 – 60)
“Masih Ibn Maryam was no more than a Messenger, many other Messengers had passed away before him, and his mother was a virtuous woman. They both used to eat food. Note how We make clear the revelations to them; then note how deluded they are.” (5:75)
“They disbelieve those who say, ‘Allah is the Masih Ibn Maryam.’ Say, ‘Who can prevent Allah, if He willed, from annihilating the Christ son of Mary, and his mother, and everyone on earth?’ To Allah belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and what is between them. He creates whatever He wills, and Allah has power over everything.” (5:17)

“O People of the Book! Do not make excesses in your religion, and do not say anything about Allah except the truth. The Masih Isa, the son of Maryam, was only the Messenger of Allah, and His Word that He conveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So, believe in Allah and His messengers, and do not say, there are ‘Three’ (gods). It is better for you to refrain (from such belief). Allah is the only one God. His Holiness is far above from having a son. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth, and Allah is enough as a Protector. Masih is not ashamed to be a servant of Allah, neither are the favored angels. Indeed, whoever is ashamed of worshipping Him, and is too arrogant – soon He will gather them all to Him. (4:171 – 172)
