ToggleThe Emergence of the Muslim Ummah
The emergence of the Muslim Ummah from the union of the Muhajir (emigrant companions from Makkah) and the Ansar (helper companions of Madinah) represents a remarkable milestone in Islamic history. The combination of the two groups, generally known as Sahaba–e–Keram, established a unique and exemplary unity among them, bonded by faith rather than tribal or worldly ties. This unity and brotherhood laid the foundation of a thriving society and state in Madinah, firmly rooted in the teachings of the divine scripture Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
The Muhajir, who had left behind their homes, wealth, and families in Makkah for the sake of Allah (SWT), were warmly welcomed by the Ansar, who demonstrated unparalleled generosity and selflessness. They shared their resources, homes, and livelihoods, establishing a brotherhood that transcended worldly considerations. This spirit of cooperation, mutual sacrifice, and devotion to Islam exemplified the core values of the emerging Ummah.
Their actions exemplified the highest standards of faith and good deeds. They embraced every trial with patience, striving in the path of Allah and supporting the Prophet (ﷺ) wholeheartedly. As Allah (SWT) states in the Qur’an:
“…. So those who believe in him (the Prophet ﷺ), take his company, help him, and follow the light (the Qur’an) that has been revealed with him, they alone will succeed in achieving their goal.” (Surah Al–A’raf, 7:157)
Thus, under the leadership of the Prophet (ﷺ), the Companions established a society and state in Madinah based on the Qur’an and Sunnah. They demonstrated selflessness, valuing the needs of others above their own and committing themselves to righteousness and justice. Allah (SWT) commits immense blessings for them:
“Allah is pleased with the Pioneers – the first of the ‘Muhajiroon’ (Migrants from Makkah) and the ‘Ansars’ (Supporters from Madinah), and those who followed them with sincerity, and they are pleased with Him too. He has prepared for them Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever. That is the sublime triumph.” (Surah At–Tawbah, 9:100)
The legacy of the Muhajir and Ansar continues to inspire the global Muslim community, reminding them of the importance of unity, sacrifice, and adherence to divine guidance.
The Concept of Sunnah in Islam
In order to understand the lifestyle of Muslim Ummah we are to know first the concept of Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ). In Islam, the Sunnah refers to the teachings, practices, sayings, approvals, and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). It serves as a model for Muslims on how to live a righteous and virtuous life, complementing the guidance provided by the Qur’an.
Key Aspects of the Sunnah:
-
- Sayings of the Prophet (ﷺ): These are recorded statements and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) known as Hadith, covering various aspects of life, including faith, worship, morals, and daily conduct.
- Actions of the Prophet (ﷺ): The Prophet’s actions provide practical examples of how to implement Islamic teachings, such as his manner of prayer, fasting, and interpersonal conduct.
- Tacit Approvals: If something occurred or done by the Sahaba–e–Keram (the companions) in the Prophet’s presence and he did not object to it, this is taken as his approval and part of the Sunnah.
- Significance in Islamic Law (Shariah): The Sunnah is a primary source of Islamic law, second only to the Qur’an. It provides explanations and elaborations on Qur’anic injunctions, offering clarity and practical application. For example, while the Qur’an commands Muslims to pray, the Sunnah details how to perform the prayers.
Types of Sunnah:
-
- Sunnah Qawliyyah: Verbal teachings and sayings of the Prophet (ﷺ).
- Sunnah Fi’liyyah: Actions performed by the Prophet (ﷺ).
- Sunnah Taqririyyah: Approvals of the actions of Sahaba–e–Keram given by the Prophet (ﷺ) through silence or acknowledgment.
Importance of the Sunnah:
-
- Guidance for Daily Life: The Sunnah helps Muslims navigate practical aspects of daily life in line with Islamic values.
- Complementing the Qur’an: It provides context and details for understanding Qur’anic verses.
- Moral and Spiritual Development: Following the Sunnah encourages ethical behavior, self-discipline, and spiritual growth.
- By adhering to the Sunnah, Muslims aim to align their lives with the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), striving for personal and communal harmony under divine guidance.
Response of Sahaba–e–Keram to the Call toward Deen of Allah (SWT)
The companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) were known as Sahaba–e–Keram (RA). In response to the Divine call of the Prophet (ﷺ) toward Deen Islam they prayed to the Almighty Allah (SWT) as recorded in the Qur’an, beautifully encapsulates their submission to Him and their longing for forgiveness, purification, and a righteous end:
“Our Lord! We have certainly heard a caller calling to faith, saying, ‘Believe in your Lord.’ So we have believed. Our Lord! So forgive us our sins and remove from us our faults and cause us to die with the righteous.” (Surah Aal–e–Imran, 3:193)
This heartfelt supplication highlights their recognition of the Prophet (ﷺ) as the divinely appointed messenger, calling humanity to salvation. They not only believed in his message but also internalized its teachings, striving to live lives of piety and righteousness.

“And when they hear what was revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears, as they recognize the truth in it. They say, ‘Our Lord, we have believed, so count us among the witnesses.’ And why should we not believe in Allah, and in the truth that has come to us, and hope that our Lord will include us among the righteous people?” (Surah Al-–Maidah, 5:83 – 84)
