ToggleIntroduction to Imaan-Aqeedah (Faith & Conviction)
“As for those who believe and lead a righteous life – these are the best of creatures.” (98:7)
The first and foremost requirement for being a Muslim is Imaan (Faith)—without that, one cannot claim to be a Muslim. Imaan is the first founding pillar of Islam, comprised of six articles of faith, which include:
- To have belief in Allah with the affirmation that there is no god but Allah, i.e., in the Oneness of Allah, as well as belief in all the attributes of Allah,
- Belief in Allah’s Angels,
- Belief in Allah’s Books (Revelations),
- Belief in Allah’s Prophets and Messengers,
- Belief in the predestined fate of good and evil. and
- Belief in the Hereafter, i.e., Qiyamah (Doomsday), Resurrection, Day of Judgement, Jannah and Jahannam, and Eternal Life.
Aqeedah is related to wholehearted belief, with certainty and conviction. It lies in the pure intention of pleasing Allah (SWT) with humility, trust, and adherence.
The Qur’anic verses on Imaan-Aqeedah are quoted below:
“Those who believe in the Unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them; And who believe in the Revelation sent to you, and sent before your time, and (in their hearts) have the assurance of the Hereafter. They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will succeed.” (2:3-5)
“O Believers! Believe in Allah and His messenger, and the Book He sent down to His messenger, and the Book He sent down before. Whoever rejects Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, and the Last Day, has strayed far in error.” (4:136)
“The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, as did the believers. They all have believed in Allah, and His Angels, and His Scriptures, and His Messengers: (They say): We make no distinction between any of His messengers. And they say: We hear and we obey. (We ask) Your forgiveness – (O) our Lord, and to You is our return.” (2:285)
“But those among them well-grounded in knowledge, and the believers who believe in what was revealed to you, and in what was revealed before you; and they are those who establish prayers, and pay Zakat (poor-due), and believe in Allah and the Last Day—upon these We will bestow an immense reward.” (4:162)
“Whoever turns his face (submits) fully towards Allah, and does good deeds, has grasped the most trustworthy handle. With Allah rests the outcome of all events.” (31:22)
“Allah is the Guardian of those who have faith: He will bring them to light from the depths of darkness….” (2:257)
Significance of Imaan
Imaan is the foundation of Islam. A Muslim is someone who has openly and manifestly stated the Sahadah (Testimony) that “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad (ﷺ) is Allah’s slave and messenger.” This is the primary stage of belief. Only verbal submission does not fulfill the requirements of becoming a Moo’min (true believer). Islam makes a difference between such verbal submission and true conviction. To become a Moo’min, one must attain the faith with certitude and conviction and have firm belief and conviction in the fundamental articles of faith, verbally, heartily, as well as in practice. Allah (SWT) says in reply to some villagers’ claim about their Imaan: “The Bedouins (Desert Arabs) say, ‘we have believed’, Say (O Muhammad ﷺ), ‘you have not yet believed, say instead, we have submitted, for faith has not yet entered your hearts’.” (49:14).
According to a Hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas () that once Jibreel () asked Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ): ‘Tell me what is Imaan?’ He replied: ‘Imaan is to have belief in Allah, the Day of Judgement, His (Allah’s) Angels, Books and Prophets and to believe in life after death, and to believe in Jannah and Jahannam, Mizan (scales) to weigh the A’mal (sins and virtues); and to believe in the Divine Decree of fate – the good and bad of it. Jibreel () then asked him: ‘If I do all these shall I be with Imaan?’ Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘When you have done all these you will have Imaan.’ (Musnad Ahmad).
A’malus Saleh (Good Deeds)
To be a true Muslim, Imaan must be accompanied by A’malus Saleh (good deeds). These two are prerequisites for entry into Jannah (Paradise). Allah (SWT) says:
“But as for those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever….” (4:122)
“It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards east or west; but it is righteousness to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your wealth, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfill the contracts which you have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the righteous.” (2:177)
“And those who strive in Our (cause), – We will certainly guide them to our Paths: For verily Allah is with those who are righteous.” (29:69)
“Whoever does righteousness benefit his own soul; whoever works evil – it goes against his own soul: nor is your Lord ever unjust at all to His Servants.” (41:46)
“Those who recite the Book of Allah, establish regular Prayer, and spend (in charity) out of what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, hope for a barter that will never fail: For He will pay them their need, indeed, He will give them (even) more out of His Bounty: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Appreciative.” (35:29-30)
True Muslim: Combination of Imaan, A’mal & Ihsan
The life of a true Muslim is led by his Imaan (Faith), A’malus Saleh (Good deeds) and Ihsan (Realization). One Hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ) states that “Imaan, A’mal (doing good deeds), and Ihsan (perfection/excellence) are the three dimensions of Deen (path of Allah).” These three components make a person a true Moo’min (believer). These elements go together to make the life of the Moo’min worthwhile in this world and the hereafter. Without Imaan, any type of good A’mal is fruitless in the Hereafter, while Imaan carries insignificant value without A’malus Saleh. The Qur’an has repeatedly mentioned Imaan and A’malus Saleh together to make the belief action oriented. The reward of A’malus Saleh without Imaan is given in this world, but it will have no share in the Hereafter because of disbelief.
Ihsan is the spiritual aspect of a Muslim, which implies the realization of one’s relation with Allah (SWT) as a result of A’mal and obedience. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) explained Ihsan in the following Hadith: “You should worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, for He sees you though you do not see Him.” (Bukhari and Muslim). When a person accepts Imaan and performs A’malus Saleh with Ihsan, then he becomes a true Muslim. So, the combination of Imaan, A’malus Saleh, and Ihsan gives a complete shape of Islam.
Verses on Imaan-Aqeedah and A’malus Saleh are quoted below:
“Say you: ‘We believe in Allah, and the revelation given to us, and to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqoob, and their descendants, and that given to Musa and Isa, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to Allah (in Islam)’.” (2:136)
“As for those who believe and lead a righteous life – these are the best of creatures.” (98:7)
“Whoever does righteous deeds, and is a believer, his effort will not be denied. We are writing it down (in the book of deeds)) for him.” (21:94)
“By Time. Verily the human being is in loss. Except those who believe, and do good works, and encourage each other to uphold truth, and exercise and recommend patience.” (103:1-3)
“So, if they believe as you believe, they are indeed on the right path; but if they turn back, it is they who are in schism; but Allah will suffice you as against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Wise.” (2:137)
“Truly the Righteous will be in Bliss: Sitting on couches (of Dignity) they will look upon (all things): You wilt see their faces vibrant with brightness of Bliss. Their thirst will be satisfied with Pure Wine sealed: The seal thereof will be Musk: And it is for this let the competitors should compete: its mixture will be water of Tasnim – a fountain, therefrom will drink those who are Nearest to Allah.” (83:22-28)

“(O Believers) Fear the Hell-Fire, which is prepared for those who reject Faith: And obey Allah and the Messenger. that you may obtain mercy. Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth, prepared for the righteous. Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) people; – for Allah loves those who are righteous.” (3:131-134)

“But those who believe and work righteousness, – no burden do We place on any soul beyond its capability, – they will be companions of the Garden, therein to dwell forever.” (7:42)

“You will see the Wrongdoers in fear on account of what they have earned, and (the burden of) that must (necessarily) fall on them. But those who believe and work righteous deeds will be in the luxuriant meads of the Gardens: they shall have, before their Lord, all that they wish for. That will indeed be the magnificent Bounty (of Allah).” (42:22)
Characteristics of Moo’min (True Believer)
Allah (SWT) has described a number of characteristics of a Moo’min (true believer) in the various verses of the Qur’an to make them distinguished and exemplary for others. The verses on their characteristics are quoted below:
“Believers such that when Allah’s name is mentioned, they feel a tremor in their hearts, and when they hear His signs recited, find their faith strengthened, and put (all) their trust in their Lord; Who establish regular prayers and spend (freely) out of the gifts We have given them for sustenance: Such in truth are the believers: they have grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness, and generous sustenance.” (8:2-4)
“And among the people is he who bids himself seeking Allah’s pleasure. Allah is kind towards His servants.” (2:207)
“The Moo’minoon are those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, and then have not doubted, and strive for Allah’s cause with their wealth and their persons. These are the sincere (truthful).” (49:15)

‘Taqwa’ (Allah-Consciousness) in the Hearts of Moo’min
“Certainly, Allah is with those who adopt God-consciousness, and those who are doers of good.” (16:128)
The literal meaning of ‘Taqwa’ is ‘to protect’, i.e., to protect oneself from ‘the wrath of Allah’ by restraining what Allah has forbidden. The broad meaning includes: ‘God-consciousness’ in every step of life, ‘God-fearing’ being careful from wrongdoings, persuading ‘Righteousness’ to keep steadfast and upright. The underlying implication of Taqwa is to tend carefully in the heart the fear of Allah (SWT) and be conscious and cautious in doing any activity that displeases Him. Believers’ (Moo’min) hearts always remain full of Taqwa that keeps them vigilant to live the righteous life prescribed by Allah (SWT). It has been reported in the Hadith that once Omar Ibn Khattab () asked Ubay ibn Ka’b () about Taqwa, Ubay () said, ‘Have you ever walked on a path full of thorns on it?’ Omar () replied, ‘Yes’. Ubay () said to him, ‘What did you do then?’ Omar () replied, ‘I rolled up my sleeve and stepped cautiously.’ Ubay () then said, ‘That is Taqwa, to protect oneself from sins passing through the dangerous journey of life so that one can successfully complete the journey unscathed.
by sin.’
Some of verses about Taqwa are cited below:
