ToggleBelief in Akhirah (Hereafter)
“And those who believe in the Revelation sent to you, and sent before your time, and have a firm belief of the Hereafter (in their hearts) – They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will surely succeed.” (2:4 – 5)
Akhirah (Hereafter or Afterlife) is the next stage of human life after death. It is the final destination of humanity. When this worldly life ends in death, the life of the hereafter begins. Death is the gateway to the hereafter. Belief in Akhirah is one of the six articles of faith in Islam. Such belief is called ‘Imaan bil Ghayeb’, which means ‘Faith in the Unseen.’ Thus, life has two parts: one is this worldly life, which is temporary, and the other one is life after death (Akhirah), which is permanent and everlasting. The present world is not an eternal abode for human beings as death will inevitably make an end to this worldly life, and according to Islamic belief, all humans will be placed in their final and eternal destinations in Akhirah.
Belief in Akhirah is very important as it makes one conscious of the accountability of humans before Allah (SWT) on the Day of Judgement. This consciousness makes one inspired to pursue righteousness and avoid wrongdoings. Keeping the belief of Akhirah in mind, if one follows the instructions of Allah (SWT) and His prophet (ﷺ), then it will bring great success in Akhirah. However, if one does not believe in the afterlife, they will face severe consequences in Akhirah. The verses on Akhirah are quoted below.
“This is the Book; without doubt, in it is guidance sure to those who fear Allah. Those who believe in the Unseen, steadfast in prayer, and spend out of that We have provided for them; And those who believe in the Revelation sent to you, and sent before your time, and have firm belief of the Hereafter (in their hearts). They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will surely succeed.” (2:2 – 5)
“…….. (O Prophet) Say, “The enjoyments of this life are brief, but the Hereafter is better for the righteous, and you will not be wronged a bit.” (4:77)
“O people! Be conscious of your Lord, and a dreadful Day when no parent can avail his child, nor can a child avail his parent, in anything. The promise of Allah is true. Therefore, do not let this life (of the world) deceive you, nor let illusions (of Satan) deceive you regarding Allah.” (31:33)

“Twa-Seen – These are verses of the Qur’an, a Book that makes (things) clear; A guide: and glad tidings for the believers, those who establish regular prayers and give in regular charity, and also have (full) assurance of the hereafter. As to those who believe not in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds pleasing in their eyes; and so they wander about in distraction. Such are they for whom a grievous Penalty is (waiting); and in the Hereafter theirs will be the greatest loss. (27:1 – 5)
“That Home of the Hereafter – We assign it for those who seek no arrogance on earth, nor corruption. And the better outcome is for the cautious. Whoever brings a virtue will receive better than it. But whoever brings evil – the evildoers’ consequences will be only according to what they used to do.” (28:83 – 84)
“But those who do not believe in the Hereafter are swerving from the path. Even if We had mercy on them, and relieved their problems, they would still blindly persist in their defiance. We have already gripped them with suffering, but they did not surrender to their Lord, nor did they humble themselves. Until, when We have opened before them a gate of intense agony, at once they will despair. It is He who produced for you the hearing, and the eyesight, and the feelings. But little gratitude you show.” (23:74 – 78)

“Those who hinder others from the path of Allah, and seek to make it crooked; and regarding the Hereafter, they are in denial. These will not escape on earth, and they have no protectors besides Allah. The punishment will be doubled for them. They have failed to hear, and they have failed to see. Those are the ones who lost their souls, and what they had invented has strayed away from them. Without a doubt, in the Hereafter, they will be the biggest losers. As for those who believe and do good deeds, and humble themselves before their Lord – these are the inhabitants of Paradise, where they will abide forever. The example of the two groups is that of the blind and the deaf, and the seeing and the hearing. Are they equal in comparison? Will you not reflect?” (11:19 – 24)
“When He wills (to create) a thing His command is to say to it, ‘Be’, and it comes to be. So, glory be to Him in whose hand is the dominion of everything, and to Him you will be returned.” (36:82 – 83)

“And they say, ‘When is this judgement, if you are truthful?’ Say, ‘On the day of Judgement, the faith of those who disbelieved will be of no avail to them, and they will not be granted respite.’ So, turn away from them, and wait. They too are waiting.” (32:28 – 30)
“Your God is one God. As for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, their hearts are in denial, and they are arrogant. Without a doubt, Allah knows what they conceal and what they reveal. He does not like the arrogant.” (16:22 – 23)
Worldly Life Versus Life in Hereafter
According to Islamic belief, life in this world does not end with death. It is an entry point to the hereafter. All humans are descended from Allah, and all will return to Him on the Day of Resurrection. Life is a test for human beings to serve the great purpose of Allah (SWT). We may understand the purpose of this life from the following excerpt: “God did not design life on Earth to be paradise, but rather a test, the punishment or rewards of which are to be had in the next life, which is where God establishes His ultimate justice. So, suffering in this worldly life does not necessarily translate into God’s disfavor, and a blissful worldly life does not necessarily translate into beatitude in the hereafter. “– The Big Questions by Dr. Laurence B. Brown.
A comparison between this life and afterlife has been given below:
| Worldly Life | Afterlife |
| Humans are mortal, and life in this world is temporary. Death will take away the human soul, putting an end to the life of this world. | A human soul is immortal and it will remain in existence for eternity. Resurrection will put an end to death, and the hereafter will be the permanent abode for all humans, where they shall stay forever. |
| Worldly life is existing, visible, and probable. Enjoyment and sufferings in this life are provisional. | The afterlife is unseen and abstract, related to belief and conviction. The life of hereafter will become visible on the Day of Resurrection. |
| Through their beliefs and actions, Allah (SWT) has made this world a testing place for humans. He has granted them free will to either obey or disobey him. | Each soul will face accountability and reckoning on the Day of Judgement, when they will be recompensed for their beliefs and deeds. |
| The pleasure of this life is temporary, yet lucrative to many people. | The pleasure of the afterlife is eternal and unparalleled, but people are heedless about the hereafter. |
| This world is a place of earning virtues for those people who worship only Allah (SWT) and do good deeds following the instructions of the Qur’an and Sunnah. | People who have enough virtues will be rewarded with Paradise in the Hereafter. But people with meagre virtues and enormous sins will enter into Hell. |
| Allah (SWT) gives enough time and respite to all wrongdoers to mend, mentor, and reform their lives in this world. He grants them mercy, if they repent and ask His forgiveness. | People will get no respite or chance of rectifying their actions in the afterlife. They will bear the burdens of their own sins committed in their worldly lives. |
| Those who are preoccupied with only worldly life having no concern for the afterlife will suffer the most in Akhirah. | People with firm belief in the afterlife, live a pious life, and perform good deeds will be the most successful ones in Akhirah. |
The related Qur’anic verses on the above-mentioned topic are given below:
“For every nation is an appointed time. When their time will come, they cannot delay it by one hour, nor can they advance it.” (7:34)
“And cite for them example of the present life: it is like rain that We send down from the sky; then it mingles with the earth causing plants and leaves green; but then it becomes debris, scattered by the wind. Allah has absolute power over everything. Wealth and children are the adornments of the present life. But the lasting virtuous deeds are better with your Lord for reward, and better for expectation.” (18:45 – 46)
“Know that the worldly life is only play, and distraction, and glitter, and boasting among you, and rivalry in wealth and children. It is like a rainfall that produces plants, and delights the disbelievers. But then it withers, and you see it yellowing, and then it becomes debris. While in the Hereafter there is severe suffering, and forgiveness from Allah, and pleasure. The enjoyment of life of this world is nothing but means of deception.” (57:20)

Until, when the earth puts on its fine appearance, and is beautified, and its inhabitants think that
they have mastered it, Our command descends upon it by night or by day, and We turn it into stubble, as if it had not flourished the day before. We thus clarify the revelations for people who reflect.” (10:23 – 24)

When We provide comfort for the human being, he withdraws and distances himself; but when adversity befalls him, he starts lengthy prayers.” (41:49 – 51)

“So, leave alone those who take their religion for play and pastime, and whom the worldly life has deceived. But remind them with it (Qur’an), lest a soul becomes condemned on account of what it has earned. It will have no helper or intercessor besides Allah. Even if it offers every equivalent, none will be accepted from it. These are the ones who are delivered to perdition by their actions. They will have a drink of boiling water, and a painful punishment, because they used to disbelieve.” (6:70)

“Indeed, those who do not hope to meet Us, and are content with the worldly life, and are pleased with it, and those who pay no heed to Our signs. These are the ones whose dwelling is the Fire – on account of what they used to do. As for those who believe and do good deeds, their Lord guides them because of their faith. They shall have rivers flowing beneath them in the Gardens of Bliss. (10:7 – 9)

“Whoever desires the transitory life, We expedite for him what We decide to give him, to whomever We wish for this world. Then We consign him to Hell, where he will enter there being condemned and dejected. But whoever desires the Hereafter, and pursues it as it should be pursued, while he is a believer; these are those whose effort will be appreciated. We grant from the grace of your Lord to these and those – all of them (of both the groups). The rewards of your Lord are not restricted. See how We have favored some of them over others, yet the Hereafter is greater in ranks, and greater in favors.” (17:18 – 21)
Death of Human Being
“He who created death and life – to test you – as to which of you is the best in conduct. He is the Almighty, the Forgiving.” (67:2)
Like every living creature, humans are mortal. The temporary worldly life ends with death at an appointed time as ordained by Almighty Allah. Death is certain and inevitable, and every human will have to succumb to death. Death is the bridge between worldly life and the Hereafter. So, every soul will have to enter the afterlife by crossing the gateway of death. Most people are indifferent, heedless, and unaware of this obvious matter. They are so busy with the enjoyment and glamours of worldly life that they remain careless about the main purpose of life till death comes knocking at their door. So, Allah cautioned us: “Do not die except as Muslims.” (3:102)
The verses relating to death are quoted below:
“The shock of death is to come in truth: This is what you tried to evade.” (50:19)
“We did not grant eternal life to any human being before you too. Should you die, are they then the immortal? Every soul will taste death. We test well with adversity and prosperity. And to Us you will be returned.” (21:34 – 35)
“(O Prophet) Say, ‘The angel of death put in charge of you will reclaim your soul. Then to your Lord you will be returned.” (32:11)
“No soul can die except by Allah’s leave, at a predetermined time……..” (3:145)
“(O Prophet) Say, ‘Allah gives you life, then He causes your death; then He gathers you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. But most people do not know.” (45:26)
“Say, ‘The death from which you flee will catch up with you; then you will be returned to the Knower of the Invisible and the Visible, and He will inform you of what you used to do.” (62:8)
“He is the Powerful over His servants, and He sends guardians (Angels) over you, until, when death overtakes one of you, Our envoys (Angels) take your soul away, and they never fail. Then they are brought back to Allah, their True Master. Lo! Judgement is His, and He is the Swiftest of reckoners.” (6:61 – 62)
“Every soul will have a taste of death, and you will receive your recompense on the Day of Resurrection……” (3:185)

“Wherever you may be, death will grab you, even if you were in fortified towers. When a good fortune comes their way, they say, ‘This is from Allah.’ But when a misfortune befalls them, they say, ‘This is from you.’ Say, ‘All is from Allah.’ So, what is the matter with these people, that they hardly understand a thing?” (4:78)
“Indeed, when soul reaches the collarbone, and it is said, who is the healer (at this critical moment)?’ And He would certainly realize that it is the real departing time. And one leg (of this world) is entangled with other leg (of the next world). On that Day is the drive to your Lord.” (75:26 – 30)
“And give from what We have provided for you, before death approaches one of you, and he says, ‘My Lord, why do You not respite me for a short while, so that I may be charitable, and be one of the righteous.’ But Allah will not delay a soul when its time has come. Allah is Informed of what you do.” (63:10 – 11)

“With Allah rests the knowledge of the Hour (Qiyamah). He sends down the rain, and He knows what the wombs contain. No soul knows what it will reap tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Allah is All-Knowing, Well-Informed.” (31:34)

(When death will come Allah (SWT) will say to the righteous persons): “O pacified soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing (to Him), and enter among My (righteous) servants, and enter My Paradise.” (89:27 – 30)
“The Angels while taking away the souls of those who are in a state of purity, will say, “Peace be upon you; enter Paradise, for what you used to do.” (16:32)
“The Angels will take their souls away while they are wronging themselves – they will say with submission: ‘We did no wrong.’ Yes, you did. Allah is aware of what you used to do. Enter the gates of Hell, to dwell therein forever. Miserable is the residence of the arrogant.” (16:28 – 29)
The Day of Return
The Day of Return begins with the death of a person. After death, every soul will return to their Lord Allah (SWT). Then, on the Day of Judgement, all of them will be brought together and placed before Him for final judgement.
“To Allah is your return, and He has power over all things.” (11:4)
“…… To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return” (2:156).
“Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned” (29:57).
“To Us is their return. Then upon Us rests their reckoning.” (88:25 – 25)
“To Him is your return, altogether. The promise of Allah is true. He originates creation, and then He repeats it, to reward those who believe and do good deeds with justice. As for those who disbelieve, for them is a drink of boiling water, and painful punishment, on account of their disbelief.” (10:4)
“So, glory be to Him in whose hand is the dominion of everything, and to Him you will be returned.” (36:83)
“……. And they (Believers) say, “We hear and we obey. We seek Your forgiveness, O our Lord! To You is our Return.” (2:285)
“To Allah belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth, and all things shall be returned to Allah. (3:109)
“Allah first originates creation, and then repeats it. Then to Him you will be returned.” (30:11)
“(O Prophet) Say, ‘The angel of death put in charge of you will reclaim your soul. Then to your Lord you will be returned.” (32:11)
“So be patient. The promise of Allah is true. Whether We show you some of what We have promised them in this life, or take your soul to Us, no matter they will have to be returned to Us.” (40:77)
Alam-e-Barzakh (Life of Graveyard)
There domain between this world and the hereafter known as Alam-e-Barzakh, which lasts between death and resurrection. The souls of dead stay here is a state of barrier or veil. The Holy Qur’an says: “… and before them is a barrier until the Day they are raised (23:100). During this period, the souls of the deceased will stay either in ‘Illiyeen’ or ‘Sijjeen’ based on their beliefs and actions in this world. Illiyeen is a place of rest for good souls, while Sijjeen is the prison of evil souls.
Two angels named ‘Munkar’ and ‘Nakeer’ come to the dead person in the graveyard and ask three questions: ‘Who is your Rab (Sovereign Lord)?’, ‘What is your religion?’ and ‘What did you use to say about him?’ — i.e., pointing to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The believing and righteous soul will respond, ‘My Rab is Allah,’ ‘My religion is Islam,’ and ‘He is Allah’s Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ).’ Then such souls will be put to rest in Illiyeen till the Day of Resurrection. There, the pious souls will sleep peacefully and dream pleasant dreams. But the unbelieving and evil souls, failing to answer these questions, will say, “Alas! I know nothing. I used to say what I heard people say.” The souls of such people will be put in Sijjeen (prison), wherein they will remain stuck with nightmares full of dreadful dreams, despair, anxiety, and utter sorrow till the Day of Qiyamah.
The verses relating to this topic are cited below:
“Not at all. The record of the wicked is in Sijjeen. But how can you know what Sijjeen is? A book of accounts.” (83:7 – 9)
“No; indeed, the record of the righteous is in Illiyeen. But how can you know what Illiyyoon is? A book of accounts. Witnessed by those brought near (Angels). Indeed, the righteous will be amid bliss.” (83:18 – 22)
“And do not say of those who are killed in the cause of Allah – ‘Dead’. Rather, they are alive, but you do not perceive.” (2:154)
“Do not consider those killed in the cause of Allah as dead. In fact, they are alive, at their Lord, well provided for. Delighting in what Allah has given them out of His grace, and happy for those who have not yet joined them; that they have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve. They rejoice in grace from Allah, and bounty, and that Allah will not waste the reward of the faithful.” (3:169 – 171)
“The Fire – they are exposed to it morning and evening. And on the Day the Hour (Qiyamah) takes place: “Admit the gang of Pharaoh to the most intense punishment.” (40:46)
Qiyamah: A Promised & Inevitable Incident
“The inevitable (Qiyamah) is imminent. None besides Allah can unveil it. Do you wonder at this discourse?” (53:57 – 59)
According to the decision, promise, and decree of the Almighty Allah, Qiyamah (Doomsday) is an inevitable event that will occur at an appointed time only known to Him. On the Day of Qiyamah, the Almighty Allah (SWT) will demolish His whole creation. On that day, nothing will exist except for His existence and what He wills. Its commencement will be all of a sudden when the Angel Israfil () blows the trumpet at the command of Allah (SWT). Akhirah (Hereafter) will be initiated with the occurrence of Qiyamah. In the Holy Qur’an, Akhirah has been termed by different names, like Day of Qiyamah, Day of Resurrection, Day of Return, Day of Judgement, Day of Retribution, Day of Reckoning, the Last Day, the Hour, and so on. Belief in Qiyamah, the Resurrection, and the Day of Judgement is one of the six articles of faith and is considered a fundamental tenet of Islam.
To initiate the life of Akhirah, Allah (SWT) will then cause the resurrection of all beings. He will reshape the world, and all humans and jinn will be gathered in the Ground of Hashar to face Allah’s Judgement. On that day, Allah will perfectly judge each and every action they do in this world. A Scale of Justice will be set to measure their deeds accurately, even if it is equivalent to an atom’s weight. After the final Judgement, their fates will be decided by the Almighty Allah for Paradise and Hell.
The verses on occurrence of Qiyamah are cited below:
“With Allah rests the knowledge of the Hour (Qiyamah).” … (31:34)
“Everything upon it (earth) is perishable. But the Existence of your Lord, Full of Majesty and Benevolence, shall remain.” (55:26 – 27)
“Allah – there is no god except He. He will gather you to the Day of Resurrection (Qiyamah), in which there is no doubt. And who speaks more truly than Allah? (4:87)

It will come upon you suddenly.’ They ask you as if you are knowledgeable of it. Say, ‘Knowledge of it rests with Allah,’ but most people do not know.” (7:187)

“Knowledge of the Hour (Judgement) is only known to Him. No fruit emerges from its sheath, and no female conceives or delivers, except with His knowledge. And on the Day when He calls out to them, ‘Where are My associates?’ They will say, ‘We admit to you, none of us is a witness.’ What they used to worship before will forsake them, and they will realize that they have no escape.” (41:47 – 48)
“……… And what will make you realize that perhaps the Hour is nearby? Those who do not believe in it seek to hasten it; but those who believe are apprehensive of it, and they know it to be the truth. Absolutely, those who question the Hour are in distant error.” (42:17 – 18)
“So, leave them to blunder and play, until they meet their Day which they are promised. The Day when they will emerge from the graves in a rush, as though they were hurrying towards a target. Their eyes cast down; overwhelmed by humiliation. This is the Day which they were promised.” (70:42 – 44)

“And they say, ‘When will this promise to come true, if you are truthful?’ If those who disbelieve only knew, when they cannot keep the fire off their faces and off their backs, and they will not be helped. “The inevitable (Qiyamah) is imminent. None besides Allah can unveil it. Do you wonder at this discourse? And laugh, and do not weep? Lost in your frivolity? So, bow down to Allah, and worship!” (53:57 – 62)
Signs of Qiyamah
“The inevitable (Qiyamah) is imminent.” (53:57)
The exact time of the occurrence of Qiyamah is only known to Almighty Allah (SWT). He didn’t disclose the exact hour of its occurrence. But some indications and signs before the advent of Qiyamah have been given in the Qur’an and Hadith. The verses relating to the Signs of Qiyamah are given below:
“Are they just waiting for that the Hour to come to them suddenly? Its signs have already come. But how can they take their warning when it has come to them?” (47:18)
“So, wait for the Day when the sky will spread out a visible smoke. That will envelop mankind; this is a painful punishment.” (44:10 – 11)
“Verily they (unbelievers) see it (Qiyamah) a distant event. But We see it imminent. On the Day when the sky will be like molten copper. And the mountains will be like tufted wool.” (70:6 – 9)
“The inevitable (Qiyamah) is imminent. None besides Allah can unveil it.” (53:57 – 58)
“The Hour (Qiyamah) has drawn near, and the moon has split. Yet whenever they see a miracle, they turn away, and say that it is a magic that will soon vanish’.” (54:1 – 2)
“He (Isa Ibn Maryam’s return) is certainly a sign of the Hour (Qiyamah), so have no doubt about it, and obey Me. This is a straight way.” (43:61)
“To Allah belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth. The coming of the Hour (Qiyamah) is only as the twinkling of the eye, or even nearer. Allah has power over everything.” (16:77)
“He (Zulkarnain) said, ‘This (protection wall) is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord (Qiyamah) comes true, He will shatter it to fragments, and the promise of my Lord is always true.’ On that Day, We will leave them (Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj) surging upon one another. And the Trumpet will be blown, and We will gather them together.” (18:98 – 99)

Description of Qiyamah
Qiyamah (Doomsday) is an inevitable phenomenon that will happen at an hour only known to Almighty Allah (SWT). Its commencement will be like a sudden shock when the Angel Israfil () makes the first blow of a trumpet at the command of Allah. The sound of the trumpet will be so terrible that all living creatures will die instantly. This appalling sound will be a single scream, a long continuous sound that will not cease until everything has perished. Then the resurrection will take place with the second blow of the trumpet. Subsequently, the earth will be given a new shape to serve the new requirements. Allah (SWT) will take direct control of all authority in His hands, exposing Himself openly and visibly. There are many verses in the Holy Qur’an that give vivid descriptions of Qiyamah. According to Hadith of Tirmidhi Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Those who want to see Qiyamah as an eyewitness should recite the Surahs Takweer (81), Infitaar (82) and Inshiqaaq (84).’ These Surahs depict such descriptions of Qiyamah that it will storm their minds and brains. The related verses of the Qur’an are given below:
“It is He who created the heavens and the earth in truth. On the Day when He will say: ‘Be,’ it will be. His saying is the truth, and His is the sovereignty on the Day when the Trumpet is blown. The Knower of secrets and exposed matters! He is the Wise, All-Knowing.” (6:73)
“On the Day when the Trumpet is blown, everyone in the heavens and the earth will be horrified, except whomever Allah wills; and everyone will come before Him in humility. And you see the mountains, and think them fixed, yet they will pass, as the passing of the clouds – the making of Allah, who has perfected everything. He is fully informed of what you do.” (27:87 – 88)
“On the Day (of Qiyamah) when We make the mountains moving; and you see the earth as an open plain land; and We gather them (humans) together, and leave none of them behind. They will be presented before your Lord in a row. ‘You have come to Us as We created you the first time. Although you claimed that We would not set an appointed time for you’.” (18:47 – 48)
“When the inevitable (Qiyamah) occurs, there is no suspicion of its occurrence. It will lower (the status of some) and elevate high (for some). When the earth will be shaken with a shock – And the mountains will be crushed and crumbled. And then they become scattered dust.” (56:1 – 6)
“There is no city but We will destroy before the Day of Resurrection, or punish it with a severe punishment. This is inscribed in the Book.” (17:58)
“When the sky is burst open. And obeys its Lord, as it must. And when the earth is leveled out. And casts out what is in it, and becomes empty. And obeys its Lord, as it must.” (84:1 – 5)
“Then, when the Trumpet will be blown – only a single blow – And the earth and the mountains are lifted up, and crushed, with a single crush. On that Day, the Event will come to pass. And the skies will crack; so, on that Day it will be frail. And the angels will be ranged around its borders, while eight of them will be carrying the Throne of your Lord above them that Day. On that Day you will be exposed, and no secret of yours will remain hidden.” (69:13 – 18)
“When the earth is to be shaken with its violent quake – And the earth will bring out its loads. And human will say, ‘What is the matter with it?’ On that Day, it will tell its tales. For your Lord will have inspired it. On that Day, the people will emerge in droves, and they will be shown their deeds. Whoever has done an atom’s weight of good will see it. And whoever has done an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” (99:1 – 8)

“O people! be conscious of your Lord. The quaking of the Hour shall be terrible indeed. On the Day when you will see it: every suckling mother will forsake her baby, and every pregnant woman will abort her load, and you will see the people drunk, even though they are not drunk – but the punishment of Allah is severe.” (22:1 – 2)

The Day of Resurrection
According to the promise of Allah (SWT), the Day of Resurrection is inevitable. On that Day, all beings will be resurrected and brought to the Final Judgement of Almighty Allah so that they can get the rewards or retributions for their actions in worldly life. The verses relating to this topic are quoted below:
“And they say, ‘When we have become bones and fragments, shall we really be resurrected as a new creation?’ Say, ‘Even if you become rocks or iron. Or some substance, which, in your minds, is even harder.’ Yet they will say, ‘Who will resurrect us?’ Say, ‘The One who originated you the first time.’ Then they will nod their heads at you, and say, ‘When will it be?’ Say, ‘Perhaps it will be soon’.” (17:49 – 51)

“……… Then the disbelievers say, ‘This is something strange. (Would we be resurrected) When we have died and become dust? This is a farfetched return.’ We know how much the earth (of grave) devours of them, and with Us is a preserved Book.” (50:2 – 4)

“Human says: ‘What! When I am dead, shall I then be raised up alive?’ But does not man remember that We created him before when he was nothing?” (19:66 – 67)

“Do they not think that they will be resurrected – On a Great Day? The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the Worlds?” (83:4 – 6)

“They say, ‘Are we to be restored to the original form? Even when we have become decayed bones?’ They say, ‘This indeed would a losing return.’ (79:10 – 12)
“And they swear by Allah with their most solemn oaths, ‘Allah will not resurrect anyone who dies.’ Yes indeed, it is a promise binding on Him, but most people do not know. To clarify for them what they differed about, and for the unbelievers to know that they were liars. (16:38 – 39)
“That is because Allah is the truth, and because He gives life to the dead, and because He is Capable of everything. And because the Hour (Day of Qiyamah) is coming (inevitable) – there is no doubt about it – and because Allah will resurrect those in the graves. (22:6 – 7)
“This is their repayment for having blasphemed against Our revelations, and having said, ‘Shall we be resurrected as a new creation, when we have become bones and fragments?’ Do they not consider that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, is able to create the likes of them? He has assigned for them a term, in which there is no doubt. But the wrongdoers persist in denying the truth.” (17:98 – 99)
“He brings the living out of the dead, and He brings the dead out of the living, and He revives the land after it had died. Likewise, you will be resurrected.” (30:19)
“And of His signs is that the heaven and the earth stand at His disposal. And then, when He calls you out of the earth, you will emerge at once.” (30:25)
‘On the Day when the Hour (Qiyamah) takes place, the sinners will swear they had stayed but an hour. Thus, they have always been deluded. But those endowed with knowledge and faith will say, ‘According to Allah’s Book you remained until the Day of Resurrection. This is the Day of Resurrection, but you did not know’.” (30:55 – 56)
“And listen for the Day when the caller calls (blow the trumpet) from a nearby place. The Day when they will hear the tremendous sound in all truth. That is the Day of Resurrection. It is We who control life and death, and to Us is the Return. The Day when the earth shall split open for them and they will come out hurriedly (from the graves). That is an easy gathering for Us.” (50:41 – 44)
“Allah is He who sends the winds, which agitate clouds, which We drive to a dead land, and thereby revive the ground after it had died. Likewise, is the Resurrection.” (35:9)
“When we have died and become dust and bones, still then shall we be resurrected? And our ancestors too? Say, ‘Yes indeed, and you will be totally disgraced’ It will be a single terrifying sound, and they will be staring.” (37:16 – 19)
Revival of Uzaier (): An Example of Resurrection
According to some Quranic commentators Uzaier () was a learned scholar while some other viewed him as one of the prophets of Allah. Uzaier () once traveled on a donkey through the ruins of Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the king of Babylon, killing thousands of Bani Israel. While he was resting under a tree, he reflected upon: ‘How can Allah revive this after its demise?’. So, Allah (SWT) caused him to die for a hundred years, and then resurrected him to show him how He revives the dead after death. He then sent down an angel to Uzaeir () to inquire how long he had been there. Uzaeir () replied that it was only a few hours or a day. The angel informed him that he was there for 100 years. The angel showed his left-over food, which was still unspoiled, but his donkey had only the bones left. As a miracle, all the bones joined together, and the donkey became alive again. Uzaeir () then wanted to resume his journey, but he could not recognize the place at all as after 100 years the city of Palestine turned into a vibrant habitation again with the help of the Persian King. The following verse gives an account of his revival:
“Or like him who passed by a town collapsed on its foundations. He said, ‘How can Allah revive this after its demise?’ Thereupon Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, and then resurrected him. He said, ‘For how long have you been staying?’ He said, ‘I have stayed for a day, or part of a day.’ He said, ‘No. You have stayed for a hundred years. Now look at your food and your drink—it has not spoiled – and look at your donkey. We will make you a sign for mankind. And look at the bones, how We arrange them, and then clothe them with flesh.’ So, when it became clear to him, he said, ‘I know that indeed Allah has power over all things’.” (2:259)
