Chapter: 21 Verses on The Day of Judgement

The Day of Judgement

“What you are promised is true, indeed. Certainly, Justice will take place.” (51:5 – 6)

The Day of Judgement is known by several names, like the Day of Retribution, the Day of Gathering (for Judgement), the Day of Reckoning, and the Day of Loss and Gain. That is the day when every individual will face trial for every action they have done in this life. That day, Allah (SWT) will be the Supreme Lord In fact, this world is not a place of perfect justice. In this world, many criminals might go unpunished for lack of requisite proof before the court of justice. As a result, the oppressed remain deprived of proper justice. But Allah (SWT) wants to take remedial measures to ensure justice to all in the hereafter. The Qur’an says, “Allah created the heavens and the earth for a true purpose—to reward each soul according to its deeds. They will not be wronged.” (45:22).

Allah (SWT) will give the verdict justly and no wrong will be done to anybody. According to the verdict, they will be placed in their eternal abode—either Paradise or Hell. Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an, “Do those who commit evil deeds think that We will regard them as equal to those who believe and do righteous deeds, that they will be similar in their life and their death?” How bad is their Judgement!” (45:21)

Belief in the Day of Judgement is one of the six articles of faith in Islam. According to Islamic belief, worldly life is followed by eternal life in the hereafter, where Allah’s (SWT) ultimate justice will prevail. The events of this Day are given below:

  • On the Day of Judgement, humans and jinns including, all other creatures, will be resurrected and gathered on the ground of Hashar.
  • On that Day every soul will face trial for its actions in this worldly life.
  • A Scale of Justice will be set to measure everyone’s performance perfectly.
  • On the Day of Judgement, the Book of Deeds of each human being will be presented before Allah (SWT).
  • On that Day Allah (SWT) will call for the evidence and witnesses to do perfect justice. Even each organ of the body will testify to the acts done worldly life.

“It is they who rejected the revelations of their Lord, and meeting with Him. So, their works are in vain. And on the Day of Qiyamah, We will consider them of no weight. Hell is their requital – on account of their disbelief, and for taking My revelations and My messengers as mockery.” (18:105 – 106)

Book of Deeds

“Everything they have done is in the Book (of records). Everything, small or large, is written down.” (54:52 – 53)

The Book of Deeds contains all the activities of whatever one did during one’s lifetime. It is the recorded evidence of all the doings of an individual. According to Islamic belief, Keraman-Katebeen (the two honored angels) are accompanying every person all the time to record each and every action till his/her death. One angel stays by a person’s right side to record all good deeds, while the other angel on the left side records all wrongdoings. Nothing of one’s actions is left unrecorded. This Book of Deeds will be produced before Allah (SWT) on the Day of Judgement as evidence for doing perfect justice to every soul.

Scale of Justice & Witnesses

On the Day of Judgement, Allah (SWT) will set up Scale of Justice to measure one’s deeds done in this life so that an atom’s weight of one’s deed is not left unmeasured. The evidences and witnesses of every action of a person will be called for conducting the trial perfectly and impartially. Even each limb and organ of the body will testify the acts of the sinners. No soul will be able to escape its guilt nor find any fault in the Judgement of Allah (SWT). The verses relating to this topic are quoted below:

“Certainly, Allah does not commit an atom’s weight of injustice; and if there is a good deed, He doubles it, and gives from His Presence a generous compensation. Then how will it be, when We bring a witness from every community, and We bring you as a witness against these? On that Day, those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will wish that they are being leveled with the earth. They will conceal nothing from Allah.” (4:40 – 42)

“We shall set up scales of justice for the Day of Judgement, so that not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least, and if there be (no more than) the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it (to account): and Sufficient are We as Reckoners.” (21:47).

“The scales on that Day will be just. Those whose weights are heavy – it is they who are the successful. But as for those whose weights are light – it is they who have lost their souls, because they used to deny Our revelations.” (7:8 – 9)

“You were certainly heedless of this day, so We removed your veil from you, and your vision today is keen. And his escort (Angel) will say, ‘This is what (your Book of Records) I have ready with me’. (Allah will say) ‘Throw into Hell every Rebellious Disbeliever. Preventer of good, Transgressor, Doubter, who fabricated another god with Allah; toss him into the severe punishment.’ His associate (Satan) will say, ‘Our Lord, I did not make him rebel, but he was far astray.’ He (Allah) will say, ‘Do not dispute in My presence – I had warned you in advance.’ The decree from Me will not be changed, and I am not unjust to the servants.” (50:22 – 29)

“On the Day when their tongues, and their hands, and their feet will testify against them regarding what they used to do. On that Day, Allah will pay them their account in full, and they will know that Allah is the Evident Truth.” (24:24 – 25)

“When they will reach it (Hell), their hearing, and their sight, and their skins will testify against them regarding what they used to do. And they will say to their skins, ‘Why did you testify against us?’ They will say, ‘Allah, Who made all things speak, made us speak (as well). It is He who created you at the first instance, and to Him you are returned (now).’ You were unable to hide yourselves from your hearing, and your sight, and your skins, to prevent them from testifying against you, and you imagined that Allah was unaware of much of what you do.” (41:20 – 22)

Remorse of Human being

Feelings of guilt and emotional remorse for wrongdoings will be so intense among the sinners when will experience the death and reality of the afterlife. Then they will realize the consequences of their evil deeds and say: “Now we have none to intercede (for us) – Nor a single friend to feel (for us). Now if we only had a chance of return, we shall truly be of those who believe!” (26:100-102. But this belated realization will bring no benefit to them as they will get no chance to rectify their actions and ultimately face tremendous consequences. These people will express their remorse in a disappointing manner, as mentioned in the following verses:

“And those who followed (the path of Satan) would say: “If only We had one more chance, We would clear ourselves of them, as they have cleared themselves of us.” Thus, Allah will show them (The fruits of) their deeds as (nothing but) regrets. Nor will there be a way for them out of the Fire.” (2:167)

“Warn them of the Day of Remorse, when the Judgement will be passed……” (19:39)

“And the Book (of Deeds) will be placed (before them); and (O prophet) you will see the sinners in great terror because of what is (recorded) therein; they will say, ‘Ah! Woe to us! What a Book is this! It leaves out nothing small or great unrecorded’……!” (18:49)

“Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, ‘Oh, I wish that I were dust’!” (78:40)

“And (when) Hell will be brought within view on that Day (of Qiyamah), then man will be mindful, but how does that remembrance avail them? He will say, ‘Oh, I wish I had sent forth (good deeds) for my future life’.” (89:23 – 24)

“When death comes to one of them, he says, ‘My Lord, send me back again, so that perhaps I may act rightly regarding the things I failed to do!’ No indeed! It is just the words he utters.” (23:99 – 100)

“The Day that their faces will be turned upside down in the Fire, they will say: ‘Woe to us! Would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger’.” (33:66)

“If even a breath of the Wrath of your Lord touches them, they will then say, ‘Woe to us! We did wrong indeed’!” (21:46)

Did we take them for mockery, or have our eyes swerved from them?’ This is certainly true — the feuding of the people of the Fire.” (38:55 – 64)

People of A’raaf

A’raaf is the ‘High Wall’ separating Jannah and Jahannam, wherein a number of people will be placed, who are evenly balanced by their virtues and sins, and their final destination is yet to be decided by Allah (SWT). They have not yet tasted the pleasures of Jannah nor the sufferings of Jahannam, but from there they will see the immense enjoyment of the people of Jannah and the severe punishment of the inmates of Jahannam. They will then yearn for Jannah and plead for a far-flung separation from Jahannam. By the mercy of Almighty Allah, they will be granted Jannah at the end. The seventh surah of the Holy Qur’an has been named A’raaf, wherein the description of the people of A’raaf has been given as cited below:

“And between them (Jannah and Jahannam) is a partition, and on the A’raaf (high wall) are men who recognize everyone by their features. They will call to the inhabitants of the Garden: ‘Peace be upon you.’ They have not entered it, but they are hoping. And when their eyes will be turned towards the inmates of the Fire, they will say, ‘Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoers.’ And the dwellers of the A’raaf will call to people they recognize by their features, saying, ‘Your hoardings did not avail you, nor did your arrogance. See! Are these the ones you swore Allah will not touch them with mercy?’ (But they are now told) ‘Enter the Garden; you have nothing to fear, and you will not grieve’.” (7:46 – 49)
