ToggleGoal & Mission of the Holy Qur’an
“(O Prophet) … A Book which We have revealed unto you so that you might lead humankind out of the depths of darkness into light – by the leave of their Lord – to the Way of (Him) the Exalted in power, worthy of all praise!” (14:1)
The Qur’an has a profound purpose: to enlighten humanity and provide a true understanding of Allah (SWT) and the reasons behind His creations. Its teachings aim to guide individuals toward the path of righteousness, fulfilling their spiritual, social, and cultural needs. By following the Qur’anic knowledge, people can attain peace and success in both this world and the Hereafter.
The mission of the Qur’an can be summarized as follows:
-
Guiding humanity to fulfill their responsibilities as representatives of Allah (SWT) on Earth, recognizing the purpose for which they were created. (6:165), (17:9), (81:27 – 28)
-
Proclaiming and establishing the universal truth of Allah’s (SWT) unity and His absolute sovereignty over all His creations. (2:255), (37:4 – 5), (112:1 – 4)
-
Establishing the rights of Allah (Haqqullah) and the rights of His creatures (Haqqul Ibad) to achieve peace, harmony, and justice in human society.
-
Establishing Islam as the comprehensive way of life for humanity, providing guidance from the Qur’an to shape their worldly affairs and attain ultimate success in the Hereafter.
-
Cultivating spirituality and morality in individuals to protect them from the temptations of evil.
-
Warning those who are ignorant and heedless, immersed solely in worldly pursuits, to redirect their focus to the eternal life of the Hereafter. Additionally, the Qur’an provides glad tidings of eternal rewards for those who believe and live righteously. (10:57 – 58), (36:5 – 6)
-
Constructing a just and equitable global order based on divine guidance.
The verses on Goal and Mission of the Qur’an are quoted below:
“O mankind! Surely there has come to you a convincing proof from your Lord: For We have sent unto you a light (that is) manifest. Then those who believe in Allah, and hold fast to Him, – soon He will admit them to His mercy and His grace, and guide them towards Himself by a straight path.” (4:174 – 175)
“O mankind! There has come to you a direction (Qur’an) from your Lord and a healing for the (diseases) in your hearts, and for those who believe, (it is) a guidance and a Mercy. Say (O Prophet): ‘In the bounty of Allah. And in His Mercy, – in that let them rejoice, that is better than the (knowledge and wealth) they hoard.” (10:57 – 58)
“Verily, your Allah is one – Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!” (37:4 – 5)
“Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of (all) existence. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth……” (2:255)
“Say (O Prophet): He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, entirely Independent (free of all needs); He begets not, nor was He begotten; And there is none comparable to Him.” (112:1 – 4)
“It is a Revelation sent down by (Him), the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful, so that you may admonish a people, whose forefathers had received no admonition, and who therefore remain heedless (of the Signs of Allah).” (36:5 – 6)
“(O Muhammad ﷺ) Say, ‘we believe in Allah and in the Revelation given to us, and to Ibrahim, Isma’il, Ishaq, Yaqoob and the Tribes. We believe in the Revelation that was sent to Musa, Isa and all other Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between them, and to Him we surrender.” (2:136).
“….. He sent down the Criterion (Qur’an). Those who have indeed rejected Faith the Signs of Allah will suffer a severe penalty, and Allah is Exalted in Might, Lord of Retribution.” (3:2 – 4)
“Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion (of Judgement, i.e., right or wrong) to His servant (Muhammad ﷺ), that he may be a warner to the people of the universe.” (25:1)
“Indeed this (Qur’an) is a great Message to (all people of) the Worlds; (beneficial) for those who amongst you wish to lead (themselves) to straight path.” (81:27 – 28)
“Certainly, We have revealed the Book to you in Truth, for (instructing) mankind. Then whoever receives guidance benefits his own soul: whoever goes astray, injures his own soul. Nor you are set over them as custodian.” (39:41)
“(O Prophet) Say, the Holy Angel (Jibreel ) has brought the Revelation from your Lord in Truth, in order to make the believers steadfast (on their Imaan), and as a Guide and Glad Tidings for Muslims.” (16:102)
“Surely this Qur’an does guide to that which is the straightest (most right path), and gives the Glad Tidings to the Believers who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a magnificent reward.” (17:9)
“And We sent down the Book only to you so that you may explain to make them clear of those things in which they differ, and that it should be a guide and a mercy to those who believe.” (16:64)
The Qur’an: Guiding Principle for Muslim Ummah
“Surely, this Qur’an guides to the straightest path and disseminates the good news to the believers who do good deeds that they shall have a great reward.” (17:9)
The Qur’an serves as the comprehensive guide for the Muslim Ummah, providing a code of life based on essential guiding principles, as outlined below:
-
The primary and foundational principle of the Qur’an is Imaan (Faith) and A’mal (good deeds). It encompasses the six Articles of Faith and the five pillars of Islam, which are fundamental principles derived from the Qur’an and Hadith.
-
The principle of ‘Tawheed’ (Oneness of Allah) holds utmost importance, affirming that Allah (SWT) is the only worthy deity and that sincere and devoted worship should be directed solely towards Him.
-
‘Taqwa’ (God-consciousness) in this life and the concept of being held accountable to Almighty Allah on the Day of Judgment are essential principles that guide Muslims towards the righteous path of Allah (SWT).
-
The Qur’an establishes the principle of judging human worth based on piety and good deeds in the sight of Almighty Allah.
-
The Qur’an upholds the principle of justice and equity for all, rejecting any form of discrimination based on race, color, gender, ethnicity, or wealth.
-
The Qur’an prescribes the principle of enjoining good and forbidding evil, encouraging Muslims to promote virtue and prevent wrongdoing.
-
The Qur’an emphasizes the principles of humanity and goodwill, fostering positive changes in human behavior and conduct.
-
The Qur’an guides Muslims to adopt moderation and avoid extremes in both their worldly and religious lives.
The fundamental principles of Islam are firmly rooted in the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet. Allah (SWT) states, “Verily in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example” (33:30), and “Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment” (33:71). As a result, Muslims are required to adhere to the practices of the Prophet (Sunnah). Additionally, avenues such as Izma (consensus), Qiyaas (analogical reasoning), and Ijtehaad (independent research) of Islamic scholars are utilized to derive opinions on matters not explicitly mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Allah (SWT) commands, “O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you” (4:59).
Verses related to the above topic are quoted below:
“….. To each among you have we prescribed a Shariah law and a set way (a code of life according to which lives are led). If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah. it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute.” (5:48)

They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will surely succeed.” (2:2 – 5)

Such are the people of truth, the righteous.” (2:177)
Peoples’ Perceptions of the Holy Qur’an
The Holy Qur’an, as the divine Book of Allah (SWT), was revealed as a guide for all of humanity. It urges individuals to contemplate its verses and messages with profound understanding and insight. However, people’s perceptions of the Qur’an vary greatly. Individuals of different faiths hold diverse perspectives regarding its messages. Believers assess the Qur’an’s message in accordance with their Imaan (faith), finding profound meaning and guidance within its teachings. On the other hand, unbelievers dismiss and disregard the advice of the Qur’an due to their disbelief, arrogance, and ignorance. The perceptions of both groups of people about the Qur’an are cited in the following verses:
“And when it (Qur’an) is recited to them, they say: ‘We believe therein, for it is the Truth from our Lord: indeed, we have been Muslims (bowing to Allah’s Will) from before this’.” (28:53)
“But the unbelievers say: ‘Nothing is this but a lie which he (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) has forged, and others have helped him at it.’ Indeed, it is they who have put forward an injustice and a falsehood. And they say: ‘Fables of the ancient time, which he has caused to be written: and they are dictated before him morning and evening.” (25:4 – 5)
“The Time of Reckoning (Day of Judgement) is coming closer to mankind: yet they are turning away heedlessly. Whenever there comes to them a renewed Message from their Lord, but they listen to it as in jest, – their hearts remain full of fun with trifles. The wrongdoers secretly confer, (saying), ‘Is he not a man like yourselves? Will you go to magic with your eyes open?’ Say: ‘My Lord knows (every) word (spoken) in the heavens and on earth: He is the One that hears and knows (all things). Rather, they say, ‘(this is) an empty dream! – Truly, he forged it! – Nay, He is (but) a poet! Let him then bring us a Sign like the ones that were sent to earlier (Prophets)’!” (21:1 – 5)

The Holy Qur’an: Criterion of Truth and Falsehood
“Blessed is He who sent down the criterion to His servant, that it may be an admonition to all creatures.” (25:1)
The followers of Satan persistently strive to sow chaos, confusion, and corruption on Earth by propagating falsehood and deception. They attempt to extinguish the divine light of Allah through their deceitful words and actions. However, Allah (SWT) has ensured that His light of truth remains perpetually ignited for the guidance of humanity. He has sent Messengers and Prophets, as well as bestowed Books of Guidance, to every community, establishing and upholding the truth. These messengers conveyed the divine messages received from Allah (SWT) to guide their respective people. They warned mankind about the dire consequences of falsehood and upheld the truth as a means of righteous guidance. Ultimately, truth prevails over falsehood. The Holy Qur’an has been revealed as a comprehensive guide, delineating the criteria to discern truth from falsehood, thus directing humanity towards the path of truth.
The verses related to the above topic are quoted below:

“If the truth conformed to their desires, the heavens, the earth, and everyone in them would have gone to ruin. In fact, We have given them their message, but they keep avoiding their message. (23:71)
“O People of the Book! Why do you confound the truth with falsehood, and knowingly conceal the truth?” (3:71)
“Whoever forges lies about Allah after that – indeed these are the unjust. Say, ‘Allah has spoken the truth, so follow the religion of Ibrahim who was the true monotheist; and he was not a pagan.” (3:94–95)
“Say, ‘Travel the earth and then observe the consequences of the falsifiers.” (6:11)
“Who is eviler than he who lies about Allah, and denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in the Hell room for the ungrateful? But he who promotes the truth, and testifies to it—these are the righteous.” (39:32–33)
“In fact, We hurl the truth against falsehood, and it crushes it, so it vanishes. Woe unto you, for what you describe.” (21:18)
“By the sky with (its) numerous paths. Truly you are saying words of discord. Deluded from it (truth) is he who is deluded. Woe to falsehood-mongers. Those who are lost (lurch) in the pool of ignorance.” (51:7-11)
“That is because Allah is the Truth, and what they invoke besides Him is untrue, and because Allah is the Sublime, the Grand.” (22:62)
